Question A/C low speed fan resistor bad?

I know my oil cooler low speed fan resistor is bad according to the R04 relay jump test and ohms test (I plan to have it fixed soon, thx to all for the posts!).
Is this the same test for the A/C fan resistor? i.e. jumping 1-7 for low and 1-5 for fast. My fast A/C fan works when i jump 1 & 5, but did not turn on when i jumped 1 & 7. Does this mean my slow fan resistor is also bad? Thx for any info.

Yep, looks like your low speed fan is bad. The tests are the same. I just replaced both resistor's. When you turn on the AC, your slow speed fan should also come on.

Hey C4-Toy,

I think you meant to type 3-7 for slow, 3-5 for fast. Terminal #1 is for the CCU fast-speed control signal. Terminal #3 (and #2) is the always-hot 12V power supply.

Hi Joe,

Part #993 616 521 01, both A/C & oil cooler. About $45 each.

OK guys... I know this has come up plenty of times before but plz bear with me. I read all the posts about the oil fan cooler resistor. I just ordered the low speed oil & a/c resistor and want to try to replace them myself.
1) How difficult is this? I am willing to give it a try.
2) Does the entire front bumper need to come off?
3) Is there any schematic someone can post for me?
4) Am i out of my mind for trying this?

Thx for any replies. Joe B 96 C4 Cab.

Slightly cheaper on Gert's site. But you'll probably have to pay for shipping.

Hey Joe,

A rough wiring diagram can be found here:

Wiring Diagram and Other Stuff

Note that the current path from the main power supply, through the fuse & relay and to the fan is highlighted. Green = slow-speed, purple = fast-speed.

Randall, Thx but this is a bit too technical for me. All i want to do is swap out the bad resistors (Oil & A/C) with the new ones i ordered. I just cant seem to locate where they are thats all. Thx again.

Joe,
I just did both. It is not really technically challenging, just a pain in the rear to get to. I watched my mechanic do the A/C then tackled the oil cooler on my own. See attached thread Oil Cooler diagnosis

[quote]Curtis - You did it backwards. Should have let the mechanic do the oil cooler one and you do the A/C one. The A/C one looks much easier to get to.

Kim - I know...story of my life. Anyway, it wasn't really that challenging of a project. Just required a little more time and patience than you expect for such a simple part.

[quote] What do you think of relocating it to the rear wind deflector attached to the back side of the cooler?

I don't see why not. Should get plenty of air to keep it cool and will be less exposed to the elements. I'm pretty sure the wires will reach.

I just didn't put much thought to relocating it because the original lasted 5 years and 70K miles...
