Default Tires: Mileage & Feel... Thoughts?

Hi all,

I know there have been numerous posts on tires lately, but if you all wouldn't mind indulging me for a moment, I'd appreciate your feedback on this

I'm going to be needing a set of 4, and I'd like to get some opinions. I have already read through TireRack's and misc others' ratings/feedback, but would love the more "personal" feel of your experiences, especially since your feedback will be specific to the 993. While I can say only good things about the Yoko AVS Sports I've had (2 sets rears/1 set fronts), I'd like to know how others feel about their tires, especially those in this (low-ish) price range, before I make the plunge again. I'd like more *mileage,* but that doesn't seem to be very realistic from what I've read so far about our 993's hunger for rears.
So, here it is: what tires have you run, what mileage have you gotten, and how'd you feel about them throughout their lifespan? No trackdays for these, just "spirited" commuting. Thanks all, I appreciate it!

Sidenote: To anyone with the new Kumho Ecsta MX on your 993, I'd especailly like to hear what you've got to say.

I just put MXs on the back of 993. I have _a lot_ of experience with different street tires, but not on 993 specifically. So far I like MXs, but this is very preliminary. More info in about a month.

Edward,

I was surprised I didnt run into you over at tirerack.com I was surfing their site just about an hour ago. I too, are in need of a set of tires! 4800 miles went quickly for my current set of Pzero assymetrico's.

I was searching the archives before that, trying to determine what 18" sizes are accepted.. I have a narrow body car and will prolly upgrade to 18" wheels for the street.

Does anyone know if Michelin will offer the Pilot Sport PS2 tire in 265 or 285 sizes soon? Looks as though they offer a front (ala GT3).

I know I dont want Continentals, but not sure what I want? The Pzero's on my car currently have been really noisy (since new) at speeds below 25mph. kinda 'grindy' when coming to a stop. They do (or did) have decent dry grip, less wet grip, especially in standing water.

Has anyone tried 235's up front on 17"or 18" wheels? My wifes Volvo has 235 P6 Pirrelli's on 17X7" wheels, and they look about right...Maybe tire availability is not there for 235's in higher speed rated tires?? I guess I should do some more surfing..

For track tires, I recently heard of a new Kumho DOT tire with a treadwear rating of 35..I think they are called 710's?? Anyone know?

Just out of curiosity, I read a lot of threads on tires but no one has mentioned the Toyo Proxies. They were on the car when I bought it and of course the back ones are now worn and have to be replaced (Edward, I only got about 7K miles on them). The front still have a lot of tread.
I was going to replace the back ones to save some money, but a I missing something about Toyo's? I know that TireRack doesn't seem to carry them.

Thanks
Rob

Rob, which ones do you have? They make several different Proxies. The best one is T1-S. A very nice tire, light, soft and grippy but suffers somewhat from soft sidewalls. The only complain, really, is not-so-crisp turn-in.

I had a set of Mich. pilot sports......for about a year.....70 mile commute per day.....and about 11 track days......I was pretty happy with that.

Chris
On my track wheels/tires I am running 265's on the front!!

Chris, V710s are out already. They will replace V700s.
So far there is very scant info and very few sizes (they are not available in 13" which I need). They are wider than V700s in the same indicated size (I've seen side-to-side pictures), they are, supposedly, stickier, they look a lot like Hoosiers in concept and execution from everything that Kumho tech people said privately and publically. Of course Hoosiers came up with (supposedly) longer-lasting 04s, so it will be an interesting battle between those two tires this year at the Nationals.

Mike (nile 13), I have the T1-S. One of my problems is the only tire I have experience with on a 993 is the Proxies.

Thanks

I have the T1-S Toyo Proxes with about 9000 miles on them. They appear to have 50% or better left on them. 235/40- 17 on front and 265/40 -17 on rear. I have not autocrossed on them yet but will next spring. I am completely amazed by the grip but then they are oversize relative to stock. Plus the over width bead protects my Turbo Twist wheel rims. We have roundabouts all over Bend and one of my buddies messed up a wheel on his 996 by getting too close to the curb while playing in the roundabout .

Rob, I think you could do much worse.
They are not bad at all for the street if the sidewall softness doesn't bother you. One of the benefits is that they are fairly quiet, although that the very last consideration in my book.
They are sold through onlinetires.com and a few other places. One drawback is that Toyo has a very weird distribution network in US, so they tend to be more expensive. On the positive side, I heard that you can sign up to some bogus "club" on Toyo site http://www.toyo.com/ and get the tires cheaper. Although... any company that advertises "take it to the track, an alternative to illegal street racing" should be (unprintable, self-moderated).
If you are considering change I would look at Kumho MX. I also found a small sourse of Bridgestone S-02s for about $100 a pop, which is very cheap, but I think they are older design S-02s.

Got rained out today, so I can tell you how the PS2s are on the track, but they sure got rid of the "grindy" low speed noises that the SO2s exhibited. I thought that was normal for a C2S! Ride is about the same, but then I went up to 235x18 and 295x18, so no worse is better than expected.

I was looking through Consumer Reports at the library this weekend, and glanced at a recent performance tire test. They rated the Toye Proxes highly in dry grip and handling, as well as for low noise and good ride. They may not be N-rated, but for a street tire in the US, could fit the bill at a relatively moderate cost.

Lexpilot, did the 265's fit no problem on the rim's? I have the 255/40-17" rims that were factory standard. I did not know the 265's would fit.
Being that my wear is not that great, I wonder if my car is still set to the 95 spec's for aligment? Apparently it can be re-adjusted to later car specs to get longer life.

Mike, thanks for the info I will follow it up.

I just bought the Kumho MX's and love them for the money (better than the P-Zeros)!
