[QUOTE=KNS;15630539]
The lawyers added the clutch interlock switch to our cars. One too many people trying to start their car (not necessarily Porsches) in gear with the resultant lurch forward. It was never required otherwise and never existed on cars prior to the 1990s.
[/QUOTE

Wasn't the lawyers. It was done for public safety. One of the tests is: Q: What could we have done to prevent this from occurring again?]

I was taught to always disengage the clutch as well; but, I stopped doing that once I understood the above.
Yikes! Been depressing the clutch at startup forever, not only on the 993, but on the SC, and every manual I've ever driven as a course of habit because that's what I was taught eons ago. This is the very first I've heard of this! Makes sense explained the way it is. At least the 993 has always had M1 15w/50 this whole time as a hedge against wear, and the SC had 20w Penn...whew.

I, for one, will trust Steve W. as his extensive experience (and truly good-guy demeanor!!) speak for themselves. Tomorrow, I start my new startup routine. Thanks for posting this!

So my 96 was at work with me yesterday and I have virtually never started any manual trans car without pushing in the clutch first. I had read this string at the office yesterday afternoon. So last night I did it and it freaked me out but it started. It is weird but I am going to try to remember to not push the clutch in from this point on. One good point my car has had 15w50 for years in it.

Yes, in all probability, that's the problem. There's a thread on the forum for bypassing it: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ro-switch.html See my post #10.

I never step on the clutch at start up on my 95. Its part of the charm of the 993, not dumbed down! So I went to test drive a Honda Civic Type R and I couldn't get it started. The salesman asks if I'm pressing down on the pedal, and I tell him, of course. The Type R has a push button start so I instinctively pressed down on the brake pedal! Still can't start then he said try the clutch! lol.

Depress or not to depress that is the question, Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous discussions, Or to take arms against a sea of maintenance issues, And by discussing, resolve them? Or something like that!

...interesting. The manual suggests only pressing the clutch when starting in cold weather:

I don't believe your '95 has the clutch microswitch, therefore, you can start w/o depressing the clutch.

I imagine this isn’t for longevity, but just to make it easier to start the engine in cold weather - less load
