Depressing Clutch to Start Car
 
I was reading the resurrected thread on replacing the kinematic lever and someone noted that MY96 had some switch that required depressing the clutch to start the car. I don't have to do this on my '96, so I was wondering if something is missing, broken, bypassed, etc.

I also saw something recently about removing the cruise control. I have never used CC in the 20+ years of ownership. What are your thoughts on removing CC and is it a worthwhile (read "easy") task?

No issues, just curious.

I don’t think 96 need the clutch depressed. It wa introduced in 97

I don’t have to depress clutch in my 97 either.

Genuinely curious - why would you care or even try to start without clutch depressed? I have never tried to start any manual car without first depressing the clutch. It’s safer and most cars require it anyway, I wouldn’t save any time by skipping this 0.05 second step if I had to think on it for s bit first to remember if this car requires it or not. But maybe there’s a reason I’m missing.

Personally, I just did it once as an experiment because I heard it was necessary on some 993s and was curious if mine was one of them. In normal operation I always depress the clutch first.

I agree with your thoughts here. When I bought my ‘98, the PO had bypassed this feature due to a faulty switch, and it was the very first thing I repaired on the car. While I always depress the clutch on starting any manual out of habit, it only takes one time for someone (myself included) to inadvertently start it in gear - a result that may not end well. Blame it on my day-job, but I am all about risk aversion ...

Interesting how many depress the clutch by habit. I've never depressed the clutch on any manual car I've owned (race or otherwise)...just always had the cars in neutral when I shut them off, and have my foot on the brake when I start it. Once, a mechanic put the car in gear and when I picked it up, felt the engagement before it got out of hand. I just put the handbrake on when I park it....guess that's my habit.

Still curious about the cruise control removal. Anyone have experience with that?

Huh. My SOP is depress clutch AND make sure shifter is in neutral. Every car, every time. Just habit. My ‘97 does require the clutch to be depressed to start.

Interesting habit, but if it works for you, all the better!

Curious, what would be the benefit from removing the CC? If the module is not working or causing other issues, then I can see doing it. But if it just “there” (working or otherwise), I don’t see how that pearl is worth the dive ... just my opinion tho.

That's sort of my question. Is it worth the effort to remove the unit/controls? I vaguely recall reading about it in some discussion about weight reduction, although I can't imagine it was very much.

I was taught to always disengage the clutch as well; but, I stopped doing that once I understood the above.

This is a very easy mod to perform as well. Most 993s up here have this mod done by MikeJ immediately.

Yeah, I remember reading Steve Weiner's posts about NOT depressing the clutch as one starts the car. As a result, I never depress the clutch on my '96 when I crank it over.

This is new to me. Fifty years of driving sticks and depressing the clutch prior to starting. Now I have to reprogram my muscle memory not to. Cool.
