Default Re-Paint and 993 Value?

I am car shopping and found a midnight blue 993 that has been repainted.
I was wondering if a high quality repaint (Glasurit/high end shop $$) in the original color drops the value of a car. (To avoid non-relevant discussion, the car I am looking at is done to a very high standard with Glasurit paint)
Thanks for your input!

Are you shopping for a driver or an investment?
e.g, in preservation class concours a reprint would cost you points

No, not a concourse or collector value...it is just a very nice 993 that I want to drive.

A lot of aircooled cars have been painted. They didn't make Clear bras back then. so these cars got beat up in the front and on the rear fenders.

surprised you are asking since you have owned many Porsches in the past, but yes a repaint is never as good as original and Porsche buyers will always discount a repainted car. you should get a discount when you buy and will also sell at a discount...probably 10-20% for a high miles 993. I would be careful of accident history if repainted.

Andy- long time no “see”. If it was a high quality repaint, there may be a small hit compared to one with original paint. I wouldn’t worry if your intent is to make this a driver as long as the maintenance is solid and price is right.

I wouldn't think twice about it. If it's a good quality repaint and you want to drive it, seems like end of story. Only exception I can think of is the concours mention above.

Hey P Daddy, it has been forever. I still check in sometimes but when I started flying my attention got diverted. Coming back on line it reminds me how much I like talking 993 with my friends and even more, owning and driving my 993.

Andy,
Based upon the car you're looking for, a well done high end complete paint in the same color as original, would be a plus in my book.

I would want my car to look good as opposed to OEM paint with rock chips around the front end, hood, side mirrors, and rear haunches.

If I were in the market and found such a car, I would more than likely invest in a clear bra to keep it free of rock chips.

P.S. I know my post goes against the current grain of thought of those having posted thus far and I would like to humbly beg for forgiveness, in advance, to the moderators of the 993 forum who do not like members who post their opinion, and then fabricate unwritten rules about posting opinion in the technical forums.

Hey Andy! Hope you are well...
These cars are 20 plus years old now and even an original paint freak like me has come to accept repainted panels and cars. I’d rather have beautiful fresh paint (as long as there was documented pics of no rust or damage before the paint job), than a tired, chipped, scratched car. Even the 38,000 mile 993 that I bought this year had 2 panels painted years ago to fix scratches. I discounted the car very little because of it. Good luck!

Talking (Glasurit/high end shop $$)

Vintage Autobody in San Luis Obispo, CA (CA Central Coast) offers a lifetime warranty on paint and labor on their Glasurit paint jobs. If I ever need paint, this is where I am going. The owner is a Porsche nut as well, owning a Beautiful 993 Carrera 4S.

You may want to inquire from that high end shop, what their warranty is on paint jobs and is the warranty (assuming there is one) transferable?

Don't miss out on a good 993 driver because of a repaint……note I had my 993 re-sprayed prior to selling it in August of 2017. I got $53,000 on a 89,000 mile car…mechanically it was
flawless, great leak-down and compression, interior good too. In 2019 when my new home is complete, with a 4 car garage, I am going to look for another 993 to provide companionship for my 6GT3.

Good luck with the search.

Don't get this! Pay more for a 993 in need of a repaint than one with a first class paintjob done?

My car was a full glass out re-paint of the original color. I did not purchase the car from the individual who completed the work but was able to track him down. He added factory aero and was worried about paint match so he opted to pay ALOT of money to get it done right. I couldn't be more than pleased with the job and he also added a clear bra. The dealer had no idea the car was re-painted, but I was able to knock off a bit from asking with this information at hand (but I still paid a premium as the color is rare). In my opinion, I would definitely take a re-painted car if done right (original color) and not due to an accident.

Sorry, but any 20+ year old car, especially a 911, or the 356 that preceded it, will not suffer from a high-quality repaint. In fact, it may command more money than the original paint if it is in poor condition with rock chips, etc. Look at it this way: how many 356s are discounted because they have a new high-end paint job? None. When cars are several decades old, or older, things like mileage and paint take a back seat to condition and documentation.

Perhaps a situation where this would not be true, would be if it is a concours condition garage queen with less than, say, less than a thousand miles a year added to the car, in which case, the car probably doesn't need a repaint to begin with.
