Default I wrote a book!

I think of you guys as my 993 tribe and I wanted to share the news that over the winter I took the time to write my first novel - a lifelong dream that has finally come true!

In addition to being a 993 enthusiast, I'm also a sailor and I spend many months each year sailing in British Columbia with my family.

This is a story that has been brewing inside of me for a very long time, inspired by the sailing voyages I've taken with my family up and around Vancouver Island. I hope that I've been able to share with you some of the adventure, mystery, and beauty of this very wild and very special place - a place that few people have ever had the opportunity to fully experience.

For those of you have sailed north I think you'll find it very evocative of sailing and exploring in this wild and special area. I was inspired by the feelings that coastal BC stirred in me as well as the local legends we heard and the amazing people we met along the way. It was also spurred by the deaths of a couple of young climbers in my hometown. It got me really thinking about the nature of wilderness and why we are drawn so strongly to it - often at our own peril.

Synopsis:
Avoided by the Coast Salish tribes for generations, Hurst Island is one of the last remnants of untracked wilderness on the British Columbia coastal frontier. As their boat sinks, Amy and Ian find themselves stranded on this island, unaware of what they are about to face. A sailing adventure. A story of survival after losing everything. Dense and atmospheric. A feast for the senses. Rich in coastal history and legend, End of the Wild will lead you to question the nature of wilderness and what it can mean to the human soul. A memory of a distant and brutal past. A vision of a ruined future. When turning back is impossible and forging ahead means risking everything, where can you turn?

Thank you! I’m really happy with how the cover turned out, I think it does a good job of conveying a sense of the story.

Congratulations, nice of you to share your other passion with us. Being from British Columbia, I will definitely look into it. How long did it take to write the book?

I spent about 3 months writing, 2 months with an editor, and 1 month with a designer on the cover. So 6 months total. None of this was full time, the most intensive part was writing, during which I spent a few hours each day with a few breaks of up to a week or two.

I see you are Vancouver, so yes the setting is not that far from you - most of the book takes place up north in the Broughton Islands. It might just make you want to go up there, if you haven’t already been .

Congrats. Was it challenging to get it published?

I self-published using Amazon KDP. They make the publishing process pretty easy, the whole thing took about a week.

The hard part is getting people to know about it. Since I don’t have a big publishing house marketing me or putting my books in stores, it’s all word of mouth. So I really appreciate anyone who reads it, reviews it, and/or tells their friends about it, if they enjoy the story.
