Crank pulley without dropping engine

After a shop rag vs cooling fan incident, I'm in need of two new belts. I've always found the double V belt setup on these cars goofy, so I'm considering either the RS single pulley or the Clewett setup to make life easier.
I've read a few threads on the Clewett system install, and swapping the crank pulley looks to be a difficult go. How bad is it with the motor in the car? For removal, is there enough room to use the pulley holding tool and a wrench simultaneously? Or am I better off holding the pulley with a big filter wrench?
For install, it looks like fitting a torque wrench/socket in there is a tight squeeze, can it be done or is the only option a wrench and guessing on the torque?
Thanks.

It's been a long time but I recall swapping my crank pulley without dropping engine. Start digging and the path will reveal itself. I used a impact gun instead of a long bar.

If I recall correctly your not going to get much of anything in there without first removing the engine cradle it's just too tight , certainly not the holding tool or a sufficient breakerbar and socket .
Once off though yes a suitable impact is easiest, it does require the partial lowering of the entire engine to clear bumper should you use the impact method...
YMMV Bert

I've installed/helped install three Clewett serpentine belt setups to date (my 993 included). There is no need to drop the engine. Just take your time and remove everything that's in the way.
I'm doing another one next month (plus a metric ton of maintenance items).
If you were in the US, I'd gladly ship my crank pulley holding tool to you. I presume that becomes prohibitively expensive going to Canada.

I just pulled my pulley off without dropping the engine. Check out my write up https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ng-engine.html I go into details on how you have access to the pulley. I had to remove the crank pulley to pull off the AC bracket. Time-consuming, but not difficult at all. Hope this helps.

Andreas, your tool might be leaving soon again. BTW, it should be back tomorrow latest Friday. Cheers again. ..

The install without bumper removal is intriguing, what all has to come out in this case? It's been awhile since I did my engine drop, but I thought the bumper had to come off to get the cat and engine carrier out (which I presume is required)?

Yep, bumper removal not required. You'll have plenty of room. Drop the mufflers, cat, aluminum cross pipe, remove AC from bracket, disconnect coil packs, remove all belts, support engine to remove motor mounts then engine carrier.

Sorry for bringing up this old post. I have a question about the crank pulley removal.
After I have removed the crank pulley nut, do I need a pulley puller to remove the crank pulley?
Thank you for helping.

Seems like a ton of work when the RS pulley works fine. What is the benefit of the serpentine belt? I put the single pulley on my car when I bought it 12 years ago and it's been perfectly trouble free.
