Question PSS-9 Settings

What settings are people using for street and track driving with the Bilstein PSS-9 setup?

I seem to recall some talk about "6" for the street and "2" or "3" for the track.

Also, would there be any reason to set front and rear to different settings?

Thanks.

Here is what I suggest:

Start with middle setting all around.
Tune your sway bars for the corner entry Under/Oversteer you want.
Tune the shocks for the mid corner Under/Oversteer you want.
Soften the shocks all around if the car will not settle quick enough in transitions.

Hope this helps.

I set mine at 9 (softest) for street driving and 1 (hardest) for track and autocross. 9 is still pretty firm for street use and 1 is nowhere near as firm as dedicated track systems so it's an acceptable compromise. I use tire pressures and driving technique to manage over/understeer. I don't have adjustable swaybars.

The other reason is the clickers on my PSS-9's are nearly impossible to set by feel and are very difficult to see, even with a flashlight and mirror. Since I run only full soft or full hard, I don't have to see or feel the clickers. Just turn them full clockwise or counter.

I've had the PSS9 on the track several times this season, and I like the way the car handles like this: F/R

Street: Bars- middle/middle Shocks- 6/6

Track: Bars- 1 less than full stiff in front, full stiff in back Shocks- front 1,rear 2

I've had this set up with both 17" Kumho 225/255 and 18" Hoosiers 245/285. I've been on small tight tracks like Gingerman and Grattan, and on Mid Ohio and Watkins Glen. I find the street settings fine, but the track settings still a little soft. But, they do provide a good compromise, and I can move the rear around when I want to, but it doesn't get too loose. I'm not sure I can tell the difference between increments of 1 step on the shocks. I've tried these settings, though, and like them. Hope this helps. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

I use 6 for street and track (in part because I can't be bothered to adjust them for the track ) with RS bars on middle/middle. Even with monoballs all around and nylon bushes in the front wishbones I find the ride at 6 fine for daily street use.

I have only had the car on the track once (Watkins Glen) so far and had both ends set at middle (5) setting. (I also had RS adjustable bars set at middle settings).I did notice a little more body roll than ideal for a dry track. Next dry/warm event I will go to full stiff all around on shocks first and then as a next step bars too.

Middle settings stiff for street but, I like it that way.....do not imagine i will go softer except for rain days at the track.

I just returned from Sears Point from the Golden Gate Region event. I had set my car like this:

PSS9's set full stiff (1) all the way around.
Sway bars front and back were full soft both front and rear (sway bars are TRG's 25 front 22 rear) so these are fairly stiff).
Tires were Pirelli slicks D5's front D4's rear.
Camber is about 3.5 front 3.0 rear.

This set up given the cool temperatures worked out very well. Could get oversteer when needed or simply four wheel drift as needed. It was excellent. Can't wait to go there again even though the walls are close by and a guy in front of me actually hit the wall coming out of turn 11. Got it on tape

Kary,

I saw your car there. Setup looked very nice. Were you timing your laps? If so, what times were you running? I was driving in DE group 1 and was a guest instructor in DE group 2. If I'd known you were a fellow Rennlister I would have introduced myself.

I leave mine on full soft for the street...still plenty stiff.

On the track I'm still experimenting. I usually drive at Sebring which is a pretty rough track and the full stiff seemed like too much....right in the middle seems to work well down there.

Matt,

I was supposed to be in DE #1 but some how ended up in DE #2. That was a big mistake since all I did was pass cars. My lap times suffered since we could only pass in three spots on the first day. The second day was better but still not much good for times. I also was not really at the edge of it all since those walls look pretty large in certain places

I was running right a 2 minutes given the conditions which is not fast but was really fun. How were you running for times?

Kary,

I was able to run consistent 2:02's througout the weekend. There were a few faster runners in the group but your 2:00's would have put you in the top 5 (of 40). VERY respectable! Most of the cars in DE1 were running 2:04 - 2:10's by my estimation.

I'll look for you next time.
