Talking The new 992.2 GTS faster than the 992.1 in 8.7 Seconds at Nürburgring

Porsche Newsroom May 13th 2024

The article doesn't say which variant of the 992.2 they tested, it only says that it is 8.7 seconds faster, however I checked online and found that the GTS 992.1 did the lap in 7:25.632 minutes, so a simple calculation of the new times:

GTS 992.1 Time 7:25.632 =7×60+25.632 = 445.632 seconds
The Tested 992.2 Car 7:16.934 =7×60+16.934 = 436.934 seconds

Subtract the times:

445.632 seconds − 436.934 seconds = 8.698 seconds

The GTS!

That places it ahead of the 991.2 Turbo S, 997.2 GT2RS, and 991.2 GT3. Impressive.

The progress continues. But do 'Ring times really resonate anymore? Am I convinced a newer car is a better experience because of its 'Ring times?

I don't think I care anymore. I bet Porsche could make a 911 EV that would blow every record out of the water.

Agree!!

Faster ring times does not equate to a more engaging experience

Exactly.

A 997.2 GT3RS is 7:33. A 992 S is 7:30. One is infinitely more engaging and fun than the other. The other is much easier to live with on a daily basis.
More importantly, how many decent drivers can extract the performance of a 997.2 GT3RS on the road?
The turbo'd 991.2 and 992.1 look like the performance sweet spot for the road: all the torque and HP you need to get in trouble fast.

If it's between a 2,900 lb base Carrera and a hybrid GTS, I might take the more visceral car.

It will be interesting to understand how Porsche will continue to provide that visceral experience with the 911 if they start to utilize Hybrid tech. I can only compare my former 17 NSX with hybrid tech (3 motors) and it was simply bonkers fast but not engaging...definitely love my 24 Carrera T more.

Agreed also - but it is a more engaging metric than the 0-60 time.

Also in terms of marketing but also in terms of technology the companies try to show that they have ways to overcome the extra weight from the hybrid components.

We will see and let's hope that the car is as engaging as before.

Please remember that the hybrid technology on the GTS is T-HEV. This is basically an e-turbo and not a hybrid car as most people think. The extra weight should be less than 100kg maybe even around 60kg since only one turbo is present and no dual mass flywheel is needed.

For the sake of porsche but also for the car enthusiast crowd let's hope this car will be as engaging as previous generations.

Faster than the 992.2 Turbo S also it seems - I find this hard to believe to be honest. Maybe tyres?

Good for them, but despite ‘extensive testing’ there’s zero chance I’d want a ‘1.0’ 992.2. With any major technology shift like this it’ll take at least a year or two to work out the gremlins of the new powertrain. In my view others can take the arrows in the back while I’ll be happy to stay a ‘fast follower’, a strategy I employed when purchasing my ‘21 C2S.

According to the article: The test car was equipped with standard road tyres, plus the aero kit with a fixed rear wing that has been available as an option for several model generations now, and which provides increased downforce at high speeds.
