Default 2024 T Lightweight Glass

Looking for some insight because I have not done my homework on this and just got an unexpected call.

Picked up my 2024 T last week and dropped it to my detailed for ppf/ ceramic/ tint.

The shop owner just called me and explained that when they were tinting the passenger side window it got a micro-crack in it while completing the tint.

He was very forthcoming and owned the issue, he offered to have their glass person replace it with OEM glass (of course on their dime).

Which sounds OK, but it’s my brand new car and I’m wondering if be better served having the repair done by my dealership and send the detail shop the bill.

my question is twofold-

1- I know the T has lightweight glass, is it all windows or just the front/ rear windshields?

2- any difference other than cost in going to dealer versus a reputable glass shop?

thanks in advance!

1-all
2-don't know but I'd recommend dealer first; I've had 2 driver's side windows replaced that spontaneously cracked.

Most dealers bring in an external shop to do their glass work, but maybe not for a side window. Dealers always markup 3rd party work.

Why should cost be a concern when someone else is paying? Get it done RIGHT regardless of cost.

OP - Sorry to hear this! For reference, I had Bray Windshield Skin installed with no issue (2024 T).
Edit: You are right @Scott P . Actually just got the letter today myself.

^^^ two different issues; the glass recall is regarding proper glue/sealing techniques. I just got my notice yesterday with a note there is no known remedy at this time.

cost is absolutely not a concern. My question was, outside of dealership installer vs third party company cost differential, if they’re both using OEM glass what should I be looking out for?

is there a specific part number I can reference for that glass piece?

what you are not concerned with but trying to ensure others are on the same page.

I'd bet my last dollar anyone other than a Porsche dealership will be hard-pressed to get that glass replacement within a tolerable amount of time. My first replacement glass took 4 weeks before it arrived to the dealer.

this is the type of information I’m looking for, thank you!

this is my first 911 and I’ve not gone too deep into this since I just found out about the window.

my initial thought is to go to dealership, but I was looking for info like “there’s no difference bc dealers use third party glass companies” or “the lightweight glass is impossible to get and you’ll only get it direct from dealer”.

i don’t know what I don’t know, so appreciate the insight!

Here's what mine looked like when it spidered spontaneously-twice! In both instances there was no obvious point of trauma like being hit by an object and was covered by my warranty both times.

Here’s the crack- it appears to be in between the two panes that make up the window as you can’t feel it on either side.

Good news is I spoke with the dealership and they have a replacement in stock and am scheduled to have the work done Monday morning.

Equally good news is owner of the detail shop called Porsche dealer before I did to make sure they had it in stock, put down his card to pay for it and is waiving the total cost of the tint for me.

It shouldn’t be so rare to work with standup people these days, but it’s nice when they come along and do the right thing!

The lightweight glass is a known issue. Tons of GT3's and T's having spontaneous breakage. Porsche is doing a good job taking care of customers on this.

Glad you got it remedied.
