Default Clanking at low speeds

I know, yet another sound thread. But i checked myriads of others posts and ones with audio didnt have this, so thought I'd ask. Car is 2022 c4s 7MT with RAS and FAL.

Anyway, i got a good recording of it finally so you can clearly hear it multiple times as i went back and forth in my driveway. It sounds like you're going over metal grates, like when your front wheels hit then rear wheels hit and you hear a clank - clank. Happens on smooth pavement, not bumps, starting from a stop and going to a stop. I've done forward and in reverse, and pretty sure both with the clutch in and out. Only notice at slow speeds. Could be happening at higher but i dont notice it. Highest I've heard it is 25mph.

Will probably have it checked at the dealer, but knowing how these sounds can be hard to locate, thought I'd see if more experienced 911 folks have heard this. It's been happening for a while now maybe a couple months (my other random sounds have gone away), but I don't remember it happening before late last year

additional info- happens in all drive modes.i i dont have sport suspension. Standard brakes. It seems like it's coming from the back left, but I can't tell if thats just because I'm closer to that side or if thats actually the case.

Do you hear this in many places or just your driveway? I ask because there is a part of my driveway I go over and hear a thump thump but never hear it anywhere else. Weird part is I do not hear it in our other cars.

Yeah i hear it everywhere. Driveway just gave me the least ambient sound to get multiple shots at capturing it.

Oh i should also mention it happens both cold and warm. While it's not every single time, most times when i start the car and i leave the house, and even after I've been driving around (like this recording was after an hour long spirited drive). Also, when i come to a stop from higher speed, i don't hear it. It's only while moving along slowly, like in stop and go situations.

What type of wheels do you have?

Something (a pebble) may be stuck between the wheel and your rotor or caliper.

Hm. Interesting.
I'm on my winter set 19/20s. you mean stuck somewhere where the wheel is bolted on, in that area?as opposed on the drum? Trying to picture what you're thinking.

But also trying to picture how a pebble being stuck would cause a sound?

I'll have to check. Pretty sure it's not torn as i looked underneath and didnt see anything like that. Only have 6k miles on the car so that would be a big surprise.

So i had my son help me locate the sound and it's definitely in the back towards the left. So i took the wheel off to look around. Nothing seemed loose on the brakes that would clank around, nothing stuck in there. CV boots were fine. So i'm leaning towards suspension or transmission area. I don't know if it was coincidence, but a couple times it seemed to make the noise as i was pressing the clutch down, particularly when the sound was on a different pace than the "clank... clank" (like the first one in the vid that sounded a bit like a ratchet).

I made an appointment with the dealer for Thursday. hopefully they'll figure it out.

I presume that you've removed any loose articles from the car, glovebox, armrest, backseats, and frunk. I had a similar clank that turned out to be a metal water bottle in a back seat footwell.

funny you say that, because when I first heard it, i thought I'd left my toolbag in the frunk, which had wrenches and other metal tools in it (and it sure sounds like clanking wrenches, doesn't it?). So i thought it was that. But nothing in there other than plastic leather cleaner, water sprayer and microfiber towels, all tucked in an organizer compartment.. I don't have anything else inside other than my windshield sun shade, and glove box just has the manual and a plastic headlamp.

When i tested it out yesterday with my son, my wife was about 25 feet away and with her bad ear could hear it loud and clear. So definitely pointing to something on outside of the cabin.

Good troubleshooting and video will hopefully help the dealer locate it. The curse of the intermittent noise is it never happens at the dealer.

exactly. Which is why I posted. Let me try and narrow it down as much as possible so i can help them help me. You never know when someone else has experienced the same thing and can have me check it out. Maybe it's something stupidly easy and i can take care of it without the hassle. If not, at least I've narrowed it down for the dealer techs.

So far I'm able to reproduce it fairly regularly so fingers crossed i wont hit the curse on Thursday. 😄

And sometimes you get a good tech that does the test drive and says “I know what that is”.

I just saw in the GT3 section that some rear shocks have been leaking out and making a clunking noise. Something to look into.
