California’s GDP in 2022 was $3.6T, representing 14.3% of the total U.S. economy. If California were a country, it would be the 5th largest economy in the world, and more productive than India and the United Kingdom.
It would be business suicide for a car marque to ignore CA. To say nothing of the potential impact to a non-CA compliant car on the resale market.
^ I realize that California is huge. But if you remove a couple of States, the US is still a gargantuan economy. You can still make cool ICE cars for the large portion of America that doesn't prostrate itself to the unyielding climate warriors. Meanwhile, still make money by selling all of the EV's you can possibly make to California, so that they can drive around all happy and self-congratulatory, believing that they are saving the earth. It's a win win!

I would love to know the percentage of 911s sold in the US that are sold in CA. I bet you it's a hefty percentage. No one, not even Porsche, is going to exclude CA or build two slightly different models just so Kentucky can have a different 911.

Change is coming.
CARB is so dumb. What if every state made their own unique laws above and beyond the EPA? It would be a nightmare for auto manufacturers.
With the recent SCOTUS case allowing Minnesota to proceed with CARB compliance, this is only going to get worse. Forget "50 state compliance" on ICE, that's the least of it, ICE cars are going to be incrementally banned entirely in the US within 10 years.

When you remove CA, NY, CT, NJ, WA, VA, MA, DC you are probably looking at the majority of the market for European luxury makes in this country. Your point may be true for pickup trucks, but not for Porsche.

You mean like all the states that have adopted California's emissions standards? Ex: New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Colorado, Nevada, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
The CARB ICE engine standards aren't the issue now, its the mandated EV unit sales and coming outright bans that are. Look ahead to the next target which is getting rid of ICE entirely, not backwards. They can make a good hybrid out of any car, its retaining the ICE engine at all that is the next battle.
