Default How many different variants of the 911 can Porsche make?

I’m sure they are all fine cars, and offer different things….but seems to me, this is just Porsche, like their configurator, just offering an endless buffet for the buyer with deep pockets to choose from…personally, I’m wating for the variant with no rattles? 🤔

Nick Murray - If you’re out there, what’s you take?

For curiosity, does Ferrari or Lamb do the same thing?

Ferrari doesn’t make as many variants or special editions. Lamborghini keeps adding special variants every few years. Just look at the Huracan and Aventador. I remember when people thought the SVJ was going to be the one to collect. Then the SVJ 63 came. Then they came with the Ultimae. But I can’t think of any manufacturer off the top of my head that has as many variants of the same model as the 911.

Lamborghini definitely does a similar thing by churning out more variants with the same platform. Look how many variants of the Huracan there are. That's a 10 year old platform and they are still cranking out new versions from it. They just aren't made for the same model years. And it looks like you can't get a new base Huracan anymore either. Ferrari seems to offer different models to serve customer budgets but you also must buy lower first before you can buy higher. I don't think any manufacturer is like GM who cranks out tons of base model Corvettes alongside Z06 Corvettes at the same time.

Q: How many different variants of the 911 can Porsche make?
A: As many as they like if they are profitable

I don't mind the sea of variants. I mind the sea of options. There was a time when variants were thoughtfully and specifically spec'd by the factory with few options for the customer to choose from. That made cars exciting. Now, you can barely tell one variant from the other and good luck if you're buying preowned.

The capacity of a kitchen is finite, but the economics of a fine steakhouse are better than a Steak and Shake.

They don’t have infinite production capabilities, so, I’m sure variants eat into the production numbers for mainstay variants.

As far as profitability…the Porsche fan base will pretty much help to insure that every variant Porsche makes, is gobbled up. Anybody ever seen a 911 variant, in recent times, that didn’t sell, and was just sitting on the dealership floor?

Dealers couldn't give away the 991 Ts at the beginning.

Yeah, I guess the upper bound for variants is the number of cars they can make.

Ironically, given the current hype around it's successor, perhaps the 991 T which word on the street suggested didn't sell as quickly as the marketing would have us believe.

T owner are convinced it's a Sport Classic, so it seems to be selling well with this generation.

The T thread on the 992 forum is one of the most viewed on RL. Different story now. Notwithstanding, everything happens in cycles. Seems like the post-Covid peak of orders and ADMs are behind us now.
