What’s this based on? Looks like the is air intake in hood? Or rather cooling intake in the hood?
Probably based on a Carrera 4.
Hood in that photo is from GT3 prototypes, for air extraction. In this application it's primary function may be aero rather than cooling.
I doubt the original 992 aerodynamics were designed for that ride height, so they're probably making changes to keep it stable at European autobahn speeds.
If they tie the reveal to a 60th anniversary of the Monte Carlo win, it's still a few years out. Plenty of other models in the 'unveiling' que.

Porsche didn't start the sporty suv - that was the BMW X5. Porsche saw that thing selling like mad, and decided to follow suit. Credit where credit is due.
Credit for being first actually should go to Mercedes Benz not BMW. The Mercedes ML appeared in 1997, and the BMW X5 later in 1999. The Cayenne first appeared as a 2003 but that was only a partial model year. I still own our 2004 Cayenne S with 252K miles and test drove both the X5 and the ML. The ML was too floaty and after a series of MB cars I wanted a change. The X5 was too small and we did not like dealing with local BMW dealers so we bought a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser until the Cayenne was available.

The ML was, as you state, "too floaty". It was not a sporty SUV.
Well I left a deposit with a dealer for a Dakar. They said im number one since I’m the first one that asked about it. They did mention there will be a $15k ADM which is fine as long as I get an allocation. Trying to get a new GTS coupe for the time being but obviously that’s next to impossible unless you wanna sped $50k over msrp

You've obviously never seen the Paris-Dakar 911 from long ago then. Besides, the X5/6/4 are singularly the ugliest vehicles BMW has ever built.
This would be the original inspiration from 1984 ... widebody, with AWD and raised with a rear spoiler but with the standard carrera engine ... sounds about similar ...
I have to agree, it is progressively growing on me.
Even where roads are reasonably good, the widespread use of speed-bumps is becoming a real pain.
Moreover this variant could be used year-around even in cold climates.
The visual appeal should be interesting as well, with the wider wheel arches and the fixed spoiler.
Courious about the rims/tires combination, it will probably be exclusive to this variant ... something only the RS gets ... at the very opposite of the 911 spectrum.
This car addresses what I see as what fast Audi wagons lack. I’ve had many of them as dailys.
RS6 had great power (too much of anything) and great sound but was a big and a bit of a boat (despite what YouTube reviewers will tell you). Ride height too low and tyre profile too small. I blew out two tyres in the middle of the night on a minor pothole. Mountain pass no phone reception. Took 3 hours of crawling to get back into phone reception. Nightmare.
RS4 handles better but same problems, tyre profile and ride height. Snow we had a month ago wasn’t even that much packed into wheel arch really bad.
RS power in allroad package would be what I would have perfect world if only able to have one car. Wagon practicality great but if you have space for a truck, then it’s not necessary.
If Safari comes in manual then it addresses all my complaints of RS4/6 ownership. I don’t care how much power it has. Strikes a great middle ground between touring and landcruiser for me. I just hope it’s not priced like a sports classic.
