Default Porsche OE Protection Plans for 992

November 2021 Delivery here...
I searched the forum but could not readily find a coherent thread covering Porsche Protection Plans. Apologies in advance if this is redundant.

For those who have taken delivery and those who are about to, which Porsche Protection plans are worthwhile to get?
1. Extended Warranty - should you wait until you factory warranty is near the expiration date
2. Wheel and Tire
3. Windshield
4. Scheduled Maintenance

The only one I choose at time of delivery is the “wheel and tire.” I think your wise to wait on making a choice for the extended warranty. Till you know you will be keeping the car for longer than the standard warranty lasts, you can always do it later. Every thing else I read on here made the “scheduled maintenance” sound like a rip off. Even the Porsche finance guy told me to pass on it. Lol

I concur with “none of the above”.

Pass on the extended warranty at time of sale. You really need to do the math if it makes any sense for you. These are reliable cars. It’s not like a McLaren where something starts to fail every couple of weeks.

You can get a lot of wheel repair done for what the wheel and tire plans cost. If you don’t know a good wheel guy, get one.

Windshield is covered under your auto insurance. I never understood the rationale behind those plans. If you can’t afford your deductible, you shouldn’t be buying a 911.

At 25k miles, I am further ahead on scheduled maintenance than most, but I am significantly ahead of the game than if I did the prepaid maintenance… and I actually drive my car. The reality is that most 911 owners don’t drive their cars enough to fully utilize what they prepaid.

Of those listed, only the wheel and tire is worth considering.

Depending on what your dealer is asking, two flats will cover the cost of most of the wheel and tire warranty.

Thank you all!

I am leaning towards the Tire and Wheel plan. Looking at the CarFax for my 981 Boxster, there were multiple tire replacements over 7 years that make the plan seem worth it.

I believe if you wait until after 1 year/10,000 miles to signup for the extended warranty (run by fidelity), you no longer have the option of the 8yr/80,000 mile and 10yr/100,000 mile packages. Max will be 7 years. Also prices increase every 6 months or so. At last check, with a $100 deductible, 8yr/80,000 was around $3,800 and the 10yr/100,000 was around $5,000.

I was debating it because I plan to keep the car for at least 10 years but decided to just invest the money and pay as needed after warranty for things I need. A new Lithium battery alone would probably cost half the warranty cost but oh well.

You can also get a prorated refund if you sell the car early or choose to transfer it to the new owner.

I thought the extended warranty was through Porsche. Does fidelity manage it? Reading the website, the extended warranty is available as long as the car is still under manufacturers warranty. Also, it look like for 10yr/100,000 it costs quite a bit more... like > $10K.

What I am worried about are things like IMS bearings, etc, that no one knows about yet,

Pretty sure in the USA that Porsche doesn’t have its own extended warranty with the exception of CPO. But things change all the time so maybe someone else knows more.

Curious as to what others have paid for the various packages lately. After 2 x $2k windshields and 4 wheel repairs on my Mercedes, I am at least open to the wheel and windshield packages for my incoming S. I will be tracking it once per week - it’s called I-285 in Atlanta!

Tire and Wheel plan for me is an essential.

Those 255/315 are sticky as hell. I see it as « an event waiting to happen » as it does happen at least once or twice a year for me!… I see it as prepaid maintenance 😜

I think these are through PFS:
Windshield ( 4 yrs): ~ $540. Include 1 full replacement and callibration
Wheel & Tire (4 yrs): ~ $2300

You can go up to 7 Years and it is only marginally more expensive.

I would recommend skipping all these finance-office add-on’s, but if you’re a very risk averse person or for any other reason decide you want things like this, know that they’re highly “marked up” and that they will often sell them for much less than they initially ask for.

1. As noted, I don't believe Porsche offers this in the US (I could be wrong). So why spend money now for something you MIGHT use in 4 years. And yes, for all those people who say "I'm going to keep the car for 10 years", well a lot of stuff can happen in the next 4 years.....
2. Peace of mind only. Mine was $2,395 for 5 years. I just went through a rear tire. Dealer said it would have been $500 if I had to pay for it. Hmmm, I think I can go through four more tires in the next five years and barely break even (vs. investing that money).. Smart money says, skip this. Peace of mind says GET IT.
3. I don't read about too many people going through windshields here. (fingers crossed that I have not angered the Gods posting this).
4. VERY IMPORTANT #1- this stays with the car. You sell the car early and you are out the money. You total the car, you are out the money. The car gets stolen, you are out the money...
4. VERY IMPORTANT #2 - you have until the 2nd maintenance (year 2) to decide on this. Wait on this until you are near year #2.

PFS has an extended warranty that they market directly to dealers. My S.A. gave me the prices for the "full protection" plan:

Term – 60 months from inservice
Miles – Up to 100,000
Deductible - $250
Price – $5,220

Term – 72 Months from inservice
Miles – Up to 100,000
Deductible - $250
Price - $5,769

Term – 84 Months from inservice
Miles – Up to 100,000
Deductible – $250
Price - $6,168

He said those prices are set by PFS, and he can't undercut them. Clearly, the latter one, that extends the warranty to 7 years and 100k miles is the best deal. I certain I'll have my Targa 4 longer than that, and it's my daily driver. Any opinions here on the prudence of this "insurance policy?" I know these cars are solid and made well,, but there are lots of electronics and gizmos that will be quite pricy if a fix is needed outside of the 4 year basic warranty.

I have done it with both my M5s. Never had a claim so I guess I “lost”. I am sure when I don’t do it I will need it. But your SA is full of crap on the pricing. There is a ton of profit in this plans and lots of room for them. You should also price out some of the better private ones and come to the negotiation armed with those prices.
