992 base or BMW M3

Would I be content with the M3? Well that's a really good question. Whichever car I get I will keep for 10+ years. I'm not sure my wife will put up with me buying another expensive car before then. And in a few years the practicality advantage of the M3 won't matter that much anymore as the kiddo gets bigger and gets his own car. So there is a chance I will be wishing I had a 911 in a few years. Then again, there will always be temptations later no matter what car I choose now.

I was asking myself the same questions (911 or M3) few months ago for the reason of looking for cheaper solution to the new 911. It is a lot about emotional preferences, because both of these are great cars. In my case, nothing can replace the love I feel to the 911. And then… if you want to keep the car for 10 years, I think its finally cheaper to buy 911. Just compare the price of 10y old M3s and 10y old 911s.
10y old 911 is 997.2 which I would like to proudly drive until today. But 10y old M3 is definitely not the car I would like to drive today (sorry BMW positive guys)
Today, I have ordered 992 and I feel like I made the best decision…

The current M3 is fantastic, I like it a lot (my review here caused quite a stir). Bang for the buck, especially with a family, go M3. Get the Porsche when the kids are teenagers and don't want to ride with Dad anymore ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
A well-driven M3 has no issues spanking a Porsche 992 - as for appearances, that's another thing altogether if you want the classic look of a 911.

Will this be your only car? How often do you need to drive? For example, I know people in NYC who have a 911 as their only car with a small kid - but they dont need to use it very often so its workable. Where I live, if I could only have one car with a kid I dont think a 911 would work - due to how often I need to drive (which is all the time.)

I could always use my wife's SUV for all family stuff. But that means the 911 is in the garage and I'm driving an SUV every time we go anywhere. For that scenario, I was even thinking a 718 would be good. With the M3 on the other hand, we would always take it with few exceptions.
That's basically my scenario - wife has an SUV, I'll have a 911. Maybe I have to drive a boring SUV more often than I'd like, but the tradeoff is worth it to me. (Again, personal choice.)

OP, if styling is the main hesitation on the M3, get a black one. If utility is a priority for you, get the M3. Otherwise 992, especially if you plan on keeping it for 10yrs.

The M3/M4 has an aggressive new look that many of us really like. Obviously you don't. Things change whether some are on board or not. This kinda reminds me of the Corvette board where the old guard blows a gasket with each new generation. Get over it.

Both are amazing cars and you are fortunate to be able to even consider either. With that out of the way, I’d get the BMW if you need a back seat. But if I need a backseat, I’d prefer a Macan or Cayenne Coupe.

The M3 did just trap 124 mph in 11.6s per Car and Driver, so it's definitely fast. But, is it fast enough to run away from its butter face and prolapsed rectum (Google rear profile pics)? Me thinks not.

I will suggest getting the new M3
I drove the G80 on two occasions and it is fantastic
I have owned multiple M cars including 4 M3 , 3 of which are/were F80 : regular, comp, and currently M3CS
I will suggest leasing. You can swap out of a lease quickly with minimal or no incentive if you have a change of heart or find yourself comfortable paying Up to a 911 . I did that on two F80 and they moved within three hours
also to me the grill is a non issue in particular on darker color. May I suggest Tanzanite blue .
Also this bucket seats look awesome and they feel very comfortable, though I did not have much seat time in them
also maintenance is free for three years other than brakes which you can add coverage for like 800 dollar through BMW
good luck

Definitely get the M3 if you need back seats for the family.
If you have no need for back seats there is only one car, the 911. Different ball game in driving dynamics to an M3.
I had a last gen M4 then went to Macan Turbo Performance package, the Macan for me was a much better car all round even though it was an SUV. It just put power down much better than the M4, which I thought was capable of killing me at any moment.
I then moved into a 992 C4S and the game was pushed even higher.
I will always love M cars and they are now extremely powerful, but ultimately they can't compare to the drive in a 911.

Probably time to cool it with the grouchy old man who can't deal with change.
So, you hate the new M3/M4, trust me, NOBODY cares.
