My 992 has a rear glass defrost button. So I took a long look at my rear glass. While it does not have the traditional and quite visible 5, 10, 15 or so wires for defrosting, it does have an extremely fine silver colored mesh that is imbedded in the entire window. To see it, I held a flashlight at an oblique angle to the glass. It is quite visible when observed like this.

Let’s see some pictures of the glass. Curious to see if it’s anything like the flexible gorilla glass.

Slight tangent, but as my 992 has been put back I thought the wife’s new Macan would be a good comparison.

she paid up for the noise insulated glass.... compared to the demo car it’s very quiet! You still have the engine “pur “ and “roar” come through the car but the road noise on brand new Pirellis is drastically reduced. So is noticeable wind noise, and importantly Mr grab hire in his truck next to us was noticeably quiet.

I think for daily driving it’s a win, also means those Bose speaker cones might not give up so quick due to the radio being turned up so loud 😉

Cautionary Tale: a buddy took his MY21 C2S to same PPF place that did a superb job on my MY20 C2S in May. As part of the process of applying tint to the front passenger windows, the special glazing was damaged making the glass unusable. Apparently, the material on the inner layer responds very differently than glass, but less of an issue with the glass in frames. No immediate replacements for the windows available in the US, so now he has to go with normal 992 glass. If you are getting tinting done on a Noise Insulated Glass, might be worth a discussion with your installer . . .

I saw these also in my rear view mirror yesterday afternoon when the sun was at the right angle. It looks like the system in my Range Rover windshield. It looks CLEAN!

One of the things that's giving me pause about adding the noise insulated glass to my build is the possibility of getting a stone chip or a cracked windshield. I'm assuming that repairs to this glass would be difficult or impossible, and a replacement windshield would probably have to be ordered from Germany (I'm guessing at a cost of $2000+.) Has anyone inquired about this with their dealers? Also, I'm thinking that the insulated glass would dilute the sound of the sports exhaust somewhat. I know that a sound symposer pipes engine noise into the cabin, but I would think that part of the exhaust sound you would want to hear bounces off of other cars, buildings, etc.-- and those secondary reverbs probably contribute to the auditory experience. It's impossible to compare cars with and without the glass before I'm locked next month, so I'll probably default to standard glass unless I read here that my concerns are not well grounded.

The camera flash is the only way I could get the grid to show up on camera. Without holding a flashlight at about a 30* angle the grid is invisible to the eye. While the camera flash picks it up, it does loose a lot of the detail that is visible to the eye when using a flashlight. Here are a couple of pictures I was able to get.

Checked with my dealer. $1247 for replacement windshield plus install. I you have glass on your insurance, then it's just your deductible.

I just replaced my 2020 cayenne windshield 2 weeks ago. This is a standard windshield not privacy or lightweight and the LABOR alone for calibration (porsche active safety system) was $1163.

Being in MA glass is "free" if you have comprehensive so I didn't pay, but even if this is an insurance scam your quote seems extremely low.

It also took 2 weeks to order- I cringe at the wait period for lightweight glass

This is the cost of the lightweight windshield glass only! Not the cost of the install which would be the same no matter what glass is used. The price came directly from the dealer. Feel free to call your dealer and check on the price of the glass only. And, if the price is an issue, don't order it on your car. Problem solved.

Ah interpreted your post incorrectly. I don't have the cost of the glass to compare.

The noise insulated glass on the Macan and other Porsches is different from this lightweight option. Honestly just wish they went with that version. Weight-savings is negligible and would rather get full sound benefit.

If you want to price a windshield and get your socks blown off, price the “correct” windshield for any car that has a Heads Up Display (HUD).
