Default Paint Protection Poll

As I wait for delivery of my 992S I am still contemplating what to do from a paint protection standpoint. There has been lots of discussion on this forum about Pro's and Con's of various options but I have not seen anything definitive on what the majority of people choose to do. So while this audience may not be fully representative of the overall 911 driving population (Rennlist population most likely much more into their cars) I thought it would be interesting to see a poll of what everyone has done or plans to do to protect their paint. As an aside, I have noticed on dealer lots that most used 911's look like they do not have paint protection film.

I would say that adding a ceramic coat or traditional wax is not a paint protection, I tend to think PPF is very different from both. My 992 is the first car I've had PPF or ceramic, very glad I did it although it wasn't inexpensive.

There are ppf like STEK, that is not only self healing, it's self shining, had it put on my tts and ZR1, and if you add paint correction, the shine is fantastic, just wash and use a good detail spray. I had my cars done at Esoteric in Ohio, and the 992 tts will go there as well

Never owned a 911 and its being build as we speak. So here's newbie question....Is there that much damage to the hood and rear fender that partial PPF is required? Is factory rear fender protection film good enough or should PPF this area?

Does anyone have a pic of rear fender without additional PPF after say few thousand miles? Curious to see what kind of damage you can have without PPF

Rear fender or rear wheel arches?

Either full wrap or nothing.

Partial PPF always leave weird lines and end up with a car with different shades of paint color.

Bite the bummer and wrap the whole thing or just enjoy the joys of ownership paint patina.

the rear panel where it starts to go wide..... I thought factory does install standard film here does it not? Would factory film offer enough protection?

Yes, it would.

The rear rocker panels take the most damage, especially now with the wider 992 chassis.

But if you’re going to do a full PPF on the car, remove and replace as the OEM film is pretty basic crap, not even sure it’s self-healing.

I’ve got 2800 kms on my car. The rear hips absolutely get thrashed by debris from the front tires. Not following other cars closely can’t save this area from debris from your own front tires. It’s crazy. If you are ppf’ing your car, this area is more important than the front and do the full rear quarter instead of up to the door handles. The majority of debris will land within the area covered by the factory film , but a lot of debris will land outside. It’s honestly ridiculous how fast that film gets thrashed. I’ve doubled layered a piece the same size as the factory one on top of the full ppf so I can change it out once a year. Within a few hundred km you will see a lot of marks in the film.

wow...I suppose that makes sense given the wide stance.....looks good but not practical? lol

Do you have pic you can share on damage described? very curious to see it. I have seen a few 992 parked and never noticed, perhaps they're garage queen with minimum mileage

in the first photo dead center, the horizontal white mark is a gouge in the film. In the second photo, most of the white dots are impacts saved by the film and not dirt.

around the city it’s maybe not as big of an issue, but any windy road where you are turning the wheels with speed is a problem.

for reference, I have zero marks on the front end of the car.

This. My 2500 mile C2S in night blue is peppered on the double layered PPF i added on the rear hips. I believe it’s likely more noticeable on darker colors as the film damage is white - but it’s still damage. Glad I did a full STEK with Ceramic coat (although ceramic is of no help on this).

I still have patina - I can just (hopefully) erase my patina by removing the PPF - it’s the best of both worlds (?)

Yeah, I’ve got OCD, but I don’t sweat the marks in the film. That’s what it’s there for.

Night blue is a beautiful colour. It doesn’t seem to be too common on 992 and I haven’t seen one yet. Can you share some photos.

OP: I went back and forth on this forever. I ended up doing front PPF. I might add ceramic later but it's expensive for what you get. For the cost where I live (CA) of a ceramic coat you could get x20 high end details/wax of the car. The money you spend is all in the paint correction, so if the paint doesn't need much protection then you're not getting the best bang for your buck. Finally it doesn't really offer much protection from things like bird poop, chips etc. It does make it WAY easier to clean the car though.

PPF I'm sold on though. I drive around now without wincing when I hear stones flick up. The wide tires and the wide hips really kick up a lot of stones, more so than any car I've had.
