You’re not. Nuts, that is. Only downside I see, is cost of living, and if you’re buying a 992, it sounds like money is not an issue for you.
Born and raised in Ca. Grew up in Coronado (across the bridge in San Diego) and went to college at Cal. Eventually, my graduate work and subsequent jobs took me East. My boys live in Chicago and Seattle. If you like doing things outdoors, hard to beat most of the West Coast for weather and activities. As for politics - SoCal was always a bastion of conservative politics. As both my wife and I are Independents, we can, and have voted for both party candidates. I value the persons integrity and positions on issues, over party allegiance. But unlike much of the South, I think you will find, on average, an educated and informed group in California. I briefly lived in North Carolina, and found that once you ventured out of an urban area, like Charlotte or Raleigh, it got real red neck, real fast. pretty much the same for much of the South. Not for me.
Anyway, good luck!

We lived in GA for several years and had a similar experience to yours in NC. I won’t hate on the state but it definitely was not a place I enjoyed living for a number of reasons. The cost of living in CA is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. And the amazing weather, oceans, mountains, deserts, driving roads, etc. all make it worthwhile to us.

On temporary vacation
My wife and I have only lived in San Diego for about a year and we absolutely love it. Work brought us here. It’s the first place I’ve lived where I’ve liked it from the very beginning. My wife tells me we’re never leaving and I tend to agree with her.

IMO, Ca is the closest, anywhere in the States, to Mediterranean type weather - low humidity and mild for much of the year. Now if Ca could just get a bit more rain...,one of my boys lives in Seattle (techie), which swings in the other direction when it comes to rain, is like the emerald city...so green and lush, with snow capped mountains almost close enough to touch them. Point being - lots of great places on the West Coast to go exploring, or drive to.
Anyway, enjoy SoCal. Still one of my favorite locations, which is why I still own a home in Coronado just 2-3 blocks from the beach. But be wary of the Zonies that invade (in the thousands) SoCal l in the Summer, in an attempt to escape the scorching heat of Arizona....and some new arrivals that I saw a lot of, when I was back in Coronado in July...saw more and more folks from Texas. Talking to my neighbor, she said it seems to be a new trend with many Texans Maybe COVID driven? Or coming to escape their heat and oppressive humidity. Cheers

We’re just a couple hour from the Parkway and stayed a weekend in Waynesboro, VA in August. Just beautiful. Waynesboro itself is an interesting town...saw some great murals there.

CA-243 Idyllwild to Banning
Folks in SoCal will likely be familiar with CA-243, the road between Idyllwild and Banning in Riverside county. Last year it was closed for 9 months or so following some major slips that needed reconstruction. I'd never been so yesterday I did a drive up there, starting in Orange County, over the Ortega highway (CA-74), through Mountain Center and then down the 243 through Idyllwild to Banning.
Now I know the rules say no photos, no 'whatever' but I only got a couple of photos for 2 reasons - COVID so only got out of the car briefly, and the roads were mainly empty so I was having fun! I mean, apart from a couple of sections of one-lane road works on the 74 and 1 slow truck it was open roads all the way. And that section from Idyllwild to Banning - SPECTACULAR! The whole road has been rebuilt and resurfaced, it really is as good as you can wish for. Only around 25 miles in total, a little longer if you add the last part of the 74 up to Mountain Center, but super smooth, beautifully engineered and flowing turns ideal for a great drive. There was some snow on the side of the road after a recent cold front but it was low 60's at coldest and more 70 in most places.
I did get one photo worth sharing, 6200' elevation with 22 miles of winding road ahead down to 2300' in Banning, If you want to see some video there is plenty on YouTube but I could only find the 'old' road.

Went to visit the in-laws this weekend. Somehow, I don’t mind making the drive out there now... 😅
