Default Covid - do you trust the dealer service at this point?

On this board, there have been several documented incidences of when dealer service has been less than stellar - PPF, oil chnages, etc.

The message from a lot of dealers is that they are taking the proper precautions to protect customers - i.e. properly "disinfecting" the cars they work on.

If basic service, on occasion, shows a lack of attention to detail - can we really believe most dealers will take the time to do this properly?

I am thinking that any car being serviced will need an at home:

- external car wash (easy)
- thorough interior disinfection

There is alot of plastic and metal in Porsche interiors.

After you get the car home maybe turn the heat up in your garage and just leave the car parked inside for a few days. Or just wipe the door handles, steering wheel and shifter down with a lysol wipe.

What’s not going to happen...dealer taking proper precautions, or owner doing clean/disinfection after a service? My dealer has provided a list of things the are doing to prevent contamination during a service, but on return I’d take the extra precaution of wiping down interior surfaces again.

I've gotten three cars serviced in this period of pandemic... I washed and disinfected them myself when I got home no matter what the dealer/service said.

Use disinfectant on all the hand touch areas in the interior (steering wheel, gear shift, all *****, switches, armrests, interior handles, mirror, headrest, indicators, etc.). Wipe down the exterior door handles. Leave the car in direct sunlight for a few hours (virus half-life is less than 2 mins in direct sunlight). You can wash the outside if you want, but UV rays don't make it necessary.

Not a doctor here, but seems like commonsense.

My local BMW dealership is advertising that they'll pick up your car from your home and drop it back off after service. I might give that a try next week when I get my summer tires put back on my 750.

Btw, if anyone is having trouble finding a decent disposable mask, I got an email from Boostane of all people yesterday about masks. They make one of the better octane boosters available and have started selling masks:

the way I look at it is
all dealers will say that they will do this and that because they have to
but like any other service, some will do much better and thorough job as compared to others .
we as customers
some are more OCD than others .. some will trust that dealers did a good job , and some won't ..
so bottom line , do what make you comfortable

The government is very strict in Québec with pandemic rules for businesses right now. Can they enforce those rules, thats another question. I went to my Audi dealer last week for my summer tires and an oil change and total car spring cleaning. They were very careful it seems, all mechanics and personal were wearing masks and gloves and they had strict 2M distance guidelines. Plus you had to pay in advance and pick up the car at a given time. But I brought wipes with me and disinfected the areas where I touch in the car when I picked it up. Also drove with the windows open for a few km's. Risk 0 is impossible, just do the best you can and don't think about it too much.

You worry too much.

You're more likely to die from driving to/from the dealer to get your car serviced than from any Covid-19 infection as a result of bringing in your car for service.

I've spent several years in infectious disease. No dealer actions can fully mitigate spread of a novel virus like Covid-19. Just had my car in for service today - steering, door panels, sneezes on surfaces, ... Plastic on steering wheel, turning off AC, plastic on seats, gloves and masks on techs ... not going to happen. I'm letting my car sit for 72hrs in my garage then I'll be reasonably confident that viral spread has been minimized.

I’d wipe it down myself. Sunlight + open windows to air it out.
