I've spent several years in infectious disease. No dealer actions can fully mitigate spread of a novel virus like Covid-19. Just had my car in for service today - steering, door panels, sneezes on surfaces, ... Plastic on steering wheel, turning off AC, plastic on seats, gloves and masks on techs ... not going to happen. I'm letting my car sit for 72hrs in my garage then I'll be reasonably confident that viral spread has been minimized.
+1. Leave the car out in the sun for further good measure. UV and heat is not friendly to this bug.
My dealer is using the Clorox mister thing on the car when they are finished. I still had my dealer park and lock the car out front for a few days before I came and picked it up. It has been now sitting in my garage since Saturday and won’t drive it until a full week passes. Call me paranoid.
They we’re offering 25% discount on service but somehow the bill was exactly the same. The invoice is inside the car so will look at it after a week passes.

OP, I think your question is really important. During the pandemic we have had our cars serviced and took delivery of a new car. We simply assume that the dealer (no matter how good they may be) has missed some touch point. When the car is delivered to the house the entire interior including seats (especially common touch points) is lysoled. We then leave the car with windows open in the garage for 24-48 hours and if possible outside in the fresh air for 2-3 hours. Then take the car for a 30 minute drive with windows open (depending on whether). So far this has worked fine. As the old saying goes an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...especially in a global pandemic!
Yes but we know a lot more about transmission than we did in May. In May I disinfected handles and ***** in my home after the cleaning crew left. These days I go back in the house and resume normal use. We’re lucky concerns about contact transmission turned out to be unwarranted.
There are lots of cases of "community transmission" with no known source. Now with this new more contagious variant it will be interesting to see the latest scientific theories. The science on this is very important and is evolving as the virus does. For me personally, I don't mind taking the extra steps until vaccinations are done.
The latest research actually shows that the passage of covid from fomites from inanimate surfaces is actually very low, I would not be very concerned about catching COVID from auto servicing. You are much more likely to get it elsewhere in public, or at a family gathering.
A good precaution would be to wear your mask in the car after you pick it up, once the car is home park it overnight and wash your hands after you get home.
Sensible article - all about risk-benefit analysis. A wipe over on heavily touched non-porous surfaces might be worthwhile with an alcohol based wipe but I wouldn’t go putting disinfectants on fabrics or leather.

Am a MD and also PH trained and been fighting this virus since last Jan 2020. This here pretty much surmises it for most people in that catching COVID19 from surfaces is less likely than from some other infected person who doesn't know they are infected or maybe do but think it is just a cold or some other illness. Most community spread is still person-to-person and now with the UK and South African variants; spread may likely be more easier/more contagious in that mode of transmission. That said wipe down commonly touch surfaces, wheel and shifter plastic covers, mask wearing, social distanced servicing (my 992 was in this week to have my exhaust done and they emailed me the invoice, texted me updates and i could interface with them digitally vs face to face using tablet/cellphone/iPad so I my total person-person contact time was very min when I picked it up) and oh yeah mask wearing. Hand sanitizer was everywhere and all employees had on masks indoors and wore gloves. Was similar to my delivery which had the same and must say it was the shortest time I've EVER spent in an auto dealership's business office closing out a car deal...less than 20 mins). So yeah it can be done....safely if both parties know what they're doing and serious about protecting each.
