I love the idea of the PDK selector just being moved to the dash in a similar fashion to the 918 as that would have made a lot more sense but Porsche doesn't seem to be about making sense lately.
Exacty. Behind the steering wheel, on the right side, under the cluster. You don't really need to access it once your gear is selected, so hiding it back there isn't a big deal.

And there is a small patch of real estate there that would be perfect for the nubbin.

The difference is in the 918 the "nubbin" is kinda obscured behind the steering wheel so you don't really notice it. In the 992 that nub/shaver is sticking up right in the middle of the interior... so your attention is really drawn to it.

As our X5 lease comes up, and as BMW has taken a significant turn for the ugly with their new gaping grill, we started looking for other options. The Benz GLE popped up as a candidate, quite a nice looking car overall with good motor choices/etc. Then I come to find that they use a column mounted stalk for the shifter. Right alongside the windshield wiper control, presumably. Needless to say, that thing is off the list. Maybe I'm in the minority, but there is at least one other potential purchaser that I know of that eliminated the GLE for the same reason.

For me at least, the shifter being in the proper location and of the proper size is a key requirement. I'm not ready to give that up.

Don't **** with our shifters, people!

Anyway, for that reason and others, my 992 will be a manual. Hopefully a 992 GT3T.

I remember when Mercedes used to have a man-sized column shift auto.

Unless someones eyesight is dire, (and if its that bad they probably shouldn't be on the road), I'd say that's far from hidden on the 918. In fact it's more in the line of sight if anything.

Personally I think they should done away with it altogether as per some of the other manufacturers.

The 992 nubbin does look a lot like a shaver, and I know, it just ain't fair - but if we had 50+ years of 918 history to reflect upon, I sure that we would have been comparing the 918's nubbin to a nose-hair trimmer.

Well, one key difference:

The 992 put said nubbin in the place of what used to be a tactile, ergonomic shifter. It makes more sense (albeit still pretty fingertip pokin' ugly) on the dash, at the very least.

Neither beats a good, grippy shifter though.
