I am one of those who criticize and mock the the car however, this is an interesting picture that is to scale that demonstrates the actual size difference. Visually with the side body lines, arches, wheels etc it does look much bigger. Just the inside though; the 991 wasn't really much bigger than a 997. It was like taking a house from the 50's or 60's and making it open concept. The size remains the same but feels so much bigger due to better design.
The OP doesn't understand that comparing a 993 to a 992 is dumb because a 993 would not meet modern safety codes. It would be illegal to make a car with that exact body shape today.
Comparing a 992 to a 997 or a 991 would make much more sense.
Also the 993 C4S weighed 3147 lbs in curb weight. The 992 C4S is 3487 lbs. Given the additional safety equipment, structural rigidity, and technology, I think it is amazing that the weight is so close.
Huge difference. Also, perfect example of why I think the old ones are way better looking. The front hood on newer ones keeps getting shorter and shorter since the drivers position is moved forward to get better weight distribution. In some angles 991 and 992 just looks weird because of the short bonnet and large coupe.
Not really as dramatic as I thought it would be from that angle.
I've seen a 991 and an aircoooled beside each other at a dealership... the size difference is ENORMOUS... the 991 made the air cooled look like a toy car...

That sounds dumb. The Miata is smaller and still made today. The Smart cars are smaller and still made today.... You absolutely can make a small, lighter[than the 992] car today that meets modern safety codes. The 992 has no more safety codes than a 991.1 yet is over 300 pounds heavier in 4S trim. Half that delta is the turbos, intercoolers, plumbing and now particle filters which have nothing to do with safety...

Yes I know, me too, that's why the above photo kind of surprised me. It doesn't look that dramatic from the top in that photo. At least to me.
