The OP doesn't understand that comparing a 993 to a 992 is dumb because a 993 would not meet modern safety codes. It would be illegal to make a car with that exact body shape today.
Comparing a 992 to a 997 or a 991 would make much more sense.
Also the 993 C4S weighed 3147 lbs in curb weight. The 992 C4S is 3487 lbs. Given the additional safety equipment, structural rigidity, and technology, I think it is amazing that the weight is so close.

Race Car
There is no doubt that any air cooled 911 is far more compact than a 991/992. Besides the visual difference, the actual width difference means that on the road in a 993 it feels like you have another half lane compared to a 991. If you go fast you might need it because it is rocket sled and moves around a whole lot more than a modern car.
And- it might be better to look at the 993 Turbo for a comparison. The 993 C4S Turbo weighed 3307 lbs and got to 60 4.4, with a top speed of 180, fantastic for its time. It also got 11 mpg city and 17 highway. Source: <https://www.excellence-mag.com/resources/specs/325#.XAiZRy2ZOjg>
When it was new its interior was considered to be a hilarious mishmash of gizmos and speaker grills the 911 was never designed for. If you have been in one you know it is outstandingly cozy with a date, or just crowded with a buddy.
No denying the 993 Turbo is a fantastic machine- sort of a pinnacle early 911. That's why they are getting to be worth as much as a decently optioned 992.
But it is also worth considering that it is also slower and gets half the mpg of a 991.2 T, which will run rings around it on any track. Safety? No comparison.

911 is a lot smaller when you look at it in person. It's the smallest sports car. If you look at other premium sports cars: ferrari, aston martin. they are all much bigger and have more road presence.

Three Wheelin'
Every time I think the 992 rear is starting to grow on me, I see a side-by-side of the 991.2 and 992 and immediately change my mind again. I'm really hoping 992.2 will fix this.

I am one of those who criticize and mock the the car however, this is an interesting picture that is to scale that demonstrates the actual size difference. Visually with the side body lines, arches, wheels etc it does look much bigger. Just the inside though; the 991 wasn't really much bigger than a 997. It was like taking a house from the 50's or 60's and making it open concept. The size remains the same but feels so much bigger due to better design.

Look at almost any other car and you will see their weights went up more substantially.

For the amount of innovation in safety and performance tech over that timeframe, yes it is close. No airbags in that 993, they didn't do offset crash safety regulations, the 992 has more than 2X the torsional rigidity scores, active suspension, etc.

Turbos, intercoolers, plumbing etc have nothing to do with safety regulations. They account for about half the weight.
Miatas are ~2400 pounds. A light car CAN be made and comply with crash standards.
