For the amount of innovation in safety and performance tech over that timeframe, yes it is close. No airbags in that 993, they didn't do offset crash safety regulations, the 992 has more than 2X the torsional rigidity scores, active suspension, etc.
Look at almost any other car and you will see their weights went up more substantially.
My 993 has airbags for driver and passenger..........?
I've had 5 different generations of 911s in my two car garage as second cars to my main dd. The 991 takes up much more floor space than the others. 911 size creeps up with each generation. In a 964 or 993, I could reach across and close the passenger door if necessary. Those cars had a much more intimate driving environment. They also took up much less of the width of parking lot spaces. Much lower chance of door dings back then. The 991 is more akin to gt tourer like an older SL by comparison. Now they say the 992 wil take up even more space. The days of the intimate sportscar are over.
That front of the 992 reminds me of the smiling Chevron cartoon cars
LOL, Exactly what I thought,....you can just see the bean counter influence in the 992 front and back,....more cheap black plastic and some ugly body seams, I'm sure it's cheaper to make now though.
I am one of those who criticize and mock the the car however, this is an interesting picture that is to scale that demonstrates the actual size difference. Visually with the side body lines, arches, wheels etc it does look much bigger. Just the inside though; the 991 wasn't really much bigger than a 997. It was like taking a house from the 50's or 60's and making it open concept. The size remains the same but feels so much bigger due to better design.
You can really see the difference here. I dont know why but this feels more like a modern day 928 than a new 911... any else feel that way?
911 is a lot smaller when you look at it in person. It's the smallest sports car. If you look at other premium sports cars: ferrari, aston martin. they are all much bigger and have more road presence.
I agree. Funny to hear 991.1 guys talking about 911s getting too big. Made sense on the 997 forum.Good discussion of course .
I wouldn't turn down a 488 Spider and it's dimensions are 2" longer and 4" wider. I suppose when the 911 finally gets way too big we can all drive MX-5 and for the price have two, one for rainy days and one for dry.

I couldn't agree with you more and I definitely wouldn't turn down a 488. My first Porsche was a 2014 Panamera and after that a 991.2. In comparison, the 911 is so much smaller and sits lower than the Panamera. I didn't really get the small size of the 911 until I owned one and drove it consistently. On another note, I'm having a hard time buying into the comments of potential confusion of the 992 and Panamera. I've not seen the 992 in person, but based on the height and rake of the current gen along is quite distinguishable from a 4 door sedan. Maybe I'll get a 992 and be able to tell for myself.........
Nicely done.
However as for the 992 looks, like others said, I hate the bumper / fender interface line and even more so squared out long frunk line. Just look at previous gens, aren't they beautiful. Even 996 as compared to 992.

I think you might feel differently if they had moved the front bumper line back like the 991. But then it really would look like a 991.3.
Anyway, I think it looks okay and waiting to see one at the dealership.

I find that it helps to have reference points to make size judgements. This pic suggests that the proportions are far less extreme than other pics suggest. So basically i fully agree with the need to see it live in person.
