AtTheGlen - your car is stunning - thanks for the review on the options you did and didn't chose - it helps a lot of people. Enjoy!

Thanks for a great review. I think you were smart to keep the cost of your car down and as close to base price as possible as you seem to move through these cars quick. I am trying to do the same thing. My build price is coming in right around the same price as yours.

The PSE is a big hangup for me right now. It seems you are quite satisfied with it. Can you comment, have you ever put an aftermarket exhaust on your previous cars? How does this compare to the sound of your GT3? have you ever heard the PSE option on the newest generation Cayenne Turbo? How would you compare the exhaust note on the 992 to the PSE on a Cayenne Turbo?

Default Thoughts on Sport Exhaust

Hello docmd2010,
Thanks for your comments and thoughts regarding Sport Exhaust. At the time I owned the 2015 991.1 Turbo S we also owned an AMG GT S. The 911 was so much more refined in terms of fit, finish, ride quality management (normal and firm), and steering, but, oh my, the AMG had their legendary twin-turbo AMG V8 growl. At the time there were a few snarky comments about how the 911s sounded like sewing machines, but now the TTS (and likely the Turbo, as well) have a nice basso rumble at idle in the sport exhaust setting and when coming to a stop. At speed, it's hard to tell given tire and wind noise. Coming out of a 991.2 GT3, I liked the dual "GT-like" exhaust better than the quad exhaust, but that's a personal choice - I know many on this forum prefer the quad exhaust.

Which leads to installation of aftermarket exhausts, which quad exhaust buyers could do to jazz up the exhaust note. I've never done mods on my cars. I never wanted more than what came off the transporter. There might have been some pragmatic thoughts like: "would it void the warranty?" "would it affect resale?" "would it affect reliability". These considerations likely reflect my professional career in areas that required a lot of risk assessment. If I were seriously tracking my car where track records mattered, I might consider tuning mods and, if not a GT3 or GT4, I would opt for Sport-PASM.

The magic of the GT3 is that with so little sound deadening, at idle at a stoplight you can hear mechanical engine and transmission sounds. When breaking in the GT3, even revving to 5,000 rpm sounded great and I wondered how could 9,000 sound better - it did. At 7,000 to 9,000 rpm, you wonder how that engine can hold together, but of course it does. That said, given that new 992 Turbo S sounds so much better than the 991 versions, it's totally satisfying to me - just in a different way. And, of course with just over 100 miles on the odometer because I went out of town just after delivery, I've only taken the engine up to about 4,500 rpm. Because the TTS is such a sensational car, I don't have any regrets coming out of the GT3 because the TTS will be much more usable day to day.

I haven't had an opportunity to hear a Cayenne Turbo with sport exhaust. When I was planning to order a Cayenne e-hybrid Turbo S a couple of years ago, I planned to order sport exhaust, but we bought a 2019 Cayenne e-hybrid (455 HP) out of dealer inventory with the standard exhaust. Typically, when we go out running errands, we return home 2 or 3 hours later without ever running the gas engine. Today at 95 degrees, we started with 23 miles EV range after a full charge and in slow suburban traffic obtained a mile on the road for every mile of range shown. The higher temperature must have helped because when it's cold, a projected range of 23-24 miles might only achieve 18-20 miles on the road. The 2021 Cayenne e-hybrids have additional EV range. Even without the sport exhaust, the V6 engine has a good exhaust note, and with or without the 20-second electric boost, I've been impressed how this 5,000+ pound Cayenne moves. The battery always keeps enough charge to deliver the boost even if pure EV driving is not possible.

I suggest that you selectively listen to car review videos (e.g., on YouTube). Invariably with 911s, there will be launch control starts with impressions of noise outside and inside. With some reviewers doing drag races with Cayenne Turbos, Lamborghini Uruses (Uri?), and Audi Q8s, etc., there will likely be a comparison of exhaust notes. "CarWow" is a good source along with many of the videos that will come up with searches of 911 TT/Ss, GT3s, Cayenne Turbos, etc. I did a couple of GT3 videos with a friend who has the SoCal Auto Focus YouTube channel. A YouTube search of "Auto Focus GT3" and "Auto Focus GT3 one-year review" will source these reviews that include launch control and acceleration runs with the GoPro camera mounted near the exhaust.

I hope this rambling response has provided some insights regarding your questions. Bottom line: I am very pleased to have ordered the sport exhaust on the TTS. I loved the GT3. It was a daily driver in CA, but now in VA where we want a high-performance sports car that I can take to the track, on road trips and load up with Costco purchases (a contortionist exercise in the GT3 with fixed buckets), the 992 TTS is perfect. As great as the 911 GT3 is, I don't miss it.

Thank you so much for such a thorough reply. You helped me make up my mind. I’m going to go with the PSE option and plan on sticking with it.

of note, I drove a 992 carrera s cab today. The sound was incredible. The 992 S alone was such a visceral experience and had so much power. I can’t even imagine the power the TTS will give. The SA also indicated that the TTS exhaust should be louder then the S, although I’m not sure if that is quite true.

Although we wound up ordering GT Silver, Black was our second choice, and considering how much time I spent on the configurator doing a black 992, I think you have done all the right gloss black bits and other options to give it a great stealth look. By the way, I like how you kept the rear Porsche logo in chrome. I like the font and why not let people know what just roared past them? Enjoy your new 911. It looks great!

congrats to you car!, looks great. Thanks, I also spend a lot of time in the configurator to get the car “complete”, so many decisions I will fix a proper spec post and explain all my choices

Wow. Every color on these cars is so beautiful.

haven’t seen a color I haven’t liked. Keep second guessing my exterior color. Right now I have GB but those black and slate grey colors look sick!
