Cracked my windshield 992 GT3 RS - considering replacing with non-lightweight glass
I knew it would happen, and last week it did: I cracked my windshield from a small pebble hitting it on the road. My windshield protection plan should cover the replacement cost so I'm not worried about that. But I did some research and found something very interesting (tl;dr: I might be able to replace it with the non-lightweight glass version of the windshield):
1. The 992 Turbo S has an option for lightweight glass (see configurator screenshot below), but you can also get the non-lightweight glass.
2. So I asked the parts desk at the Porsche dealership for the part numbers for both windshields for the 992 Turbo S. The 992 Turbo S part numbers are:
* Non-lightweight glass windscreen: 992-845-011-AQ - price $2034.82
* Lightweight glass windscreen: 992-845-011-AN - price $2941.50
3. Then I asked for the part number for the 992 GT3 RS windshield (which is only offered with the lightweight glass option):
* Lightweight glass windscreen: 992-845-011-AN - price $2941.50
4. Bingo! The Turbo S and the GT3 RS share the same part number for the lightweight glass windscreen! This means that it's very possible that the non-lightweight glass version from the Turbo S will also fit in the GT3 RS! I mean, it almost for sure should fit.. unless there's some weird incompatibility with the camera lens or light sensor or some "unknown unknown". I am trying to talk to the actual person who installs the windshields for the Porsche dealership (he's an outside specialist) to ask him, based on his experience, whether it is likely to work.
My Porsche dealership service guy knows I'm considering the non-lightweight glass, and he told me via text:
"I just got word that Porsche has improved the glass to all of the lightweight glass to be able to prevent these problems. I truly think you should stick with the OEM glass that the vehicle came with. There's several people around the nation that have had the windshield cracked by while having the lightweight glass, so Porsche got note of it and has improved them for anyone that has had these issues.".
I'm posting here for discussion. I will post any new information I learn. Does anyone else have any knowledge of this, and whether there's any reason the non-lightweight windshield from the 992 Turbo S wouldn't work?

I am curious if anyone else can also corroborate this : My Porsche dealership service guy knows I'm considering the non-lightweight glass, and he told me via text:

If this is confirmed, I’d like to include LWG in my Turbo order locking in a couple of weeks.

2) does this mean we all have to weight for each of our windows to break before we can have access to this? I've already gone through a rear windshield. But likely got the old light weight replacement... As no mention of new and improved was given to me.

I will replace with regular glass when they break, if Porsche will no longer cover under warranty.
Thanks for verifying the part numbers. I already surmised the Turbo S glass would fit in all locations on the RS, but your enquiry confirms this.

I went down to the Porsche dealership today and as I drove in I saw the "glass guy" outside replacing a windshield on a GT3. I asked him a bunch of questions and he said he didn't see any reason why the non-lightweight glass wouldn't work. So I'm going to go ahead and try the non-lightweight glass. I'll post updates. If it doesn't work for some reason, I'll have a non-lightweight glass windshield for sale!
Here's a photo I took of the new windshield going into the GT3:

I’m replacing the glass in my GT3 as well now (rock chip), but since it’s the same insurance cost either way I’m going to stick with the lightweight this time.

Non-lightweight glass should work and you will not lose much if anything. The lightweight windshield has been a nightmare on my Cayenne - it breaks too easily! I got glass replacement coverage for RS just because of this (my insurance does not cover glass). I hope Porsche fixes the issue of it breaking so easily.

Edit: It is the same. I just looked up(992-845-011-AN) and the parts place says it will fit 992 GT3 as well.
