I was insuring 5 cars with Farmers and my annual insurance bill was running about $7k a year. No accidents, no teen drivers, and we don’t have any major risk factors, and we are low mileage drivers (combined mileage across all the vehicles is only about 18k a year). I switched 4 of the 5 cars over to Metromile and my consolidated bill dropped to about $1,800. I left my 2007 F150 on Farmers to maintain my umbrella policy attached to my homeowners insurance.

I have no idea what the claim process is with Metromile but, in my experience, the claim process any pick-your-favorite-insurance-company leaves open the possibility for disappointment. The coverage limits are fair and I took a $1k deductible. In addition to the 2017 GTS, I am insuring a 2016 E63, 2011 Range Rover Sport, and a 2007 CLS550 with Metromile. I have to say that I was pretty shocked to see how much I am saving on insurance and pocketing $5,000 a year in savings means I really don’t care what the deductible is when I need to use it. Hell, I could afford to effectively self-insure for non-major incidents given the savings.

Interestingly I have 4 cars and all are around a grand each, including my Fiat 500 Abarth which has a replacement value of around 10K. My agent was unable to explain to me why a $10k car and a $100k car cost around the same to insure.
Time to shop around!
If the agent can't even explain why they charge you so much, then you should look elsewhere.

Amen to that! Especially before the teen gets added! They really hurt the pocketbook for car insurance.

The Geico app allows me to see how much each part of the coverage costs for each car individually. I can't imagine an agent not being able to do the same.

For example, I can see that the collision part of my coverage on my 2017 S costs about 3x that of our 2015 Lexus Suv and 10x my older pickup truck, with top-of-the-line coverages but a $1000 deductible. If I want to consider a coverage change, the app quotes it on the spot with a full breakdown. Altogether with Geico and full coverage on all cars I'm paying right at $2400 a year, with the Porsche being just under half of that. So much good info is provided.,, you can get the quote online for free.

Oddly enough I ended up last year with broken windshields on all three cars and the claims all went smoothly (statistically a little crazy but true!) My wife had a collision a couple of years ago and that all went just fine too. No concerns about Geico for me.

To each his own, but why let your insurance company ride along and keep an eye on your every move? Perhaps in a Prius, but not a 911.

Yeah. My insurance rates would increase 1000 fold if they saw how I drive. But not everybody drives like me. It might be a good deal for some of us.

My State Farm agent told me that if you already have the lowest mileage rating, then it is unlikely anything good will happen by signing up for the service. They get a report from OnStar for GM vehicles, so just for fun I had OnStar provide me the report for my new SUV they would send to the insurance company, if I authorized them to do so. The first report I got after a few weeks of very light usage of the vehicle was kind of shocking. It made me look like an out of control teenager.

I seriously could not think of a single incidence where I had to do anything remotely close to hard braking, yet the report said there were 23 incidences of hard braking. Just that first report confirmed why my agent told me nothing good would come from the service.

And that's the way it works. Its such a scam. Stay with one with no claims, exactly what SHOULD result in lower costs and premiums, and instead your rates go up. Shop or move around, exactly what SHOULD result in higher costs and premiums, and instead you find lower rates. Makes no sense from the risk management theory point of view they push on the public. Makes total sense from the cultivating an income stream point of view that is reality.

Shopping around won't always halve your rate. But it will keep it low and increasing a lot slower than it otherwise would.

For a 2015 C2S here in central IL I pay $950 a year for 500k and a $500 deductible with Amica. There is a different rate when the car is hibernating but I don't know what that is yet.

Thanks for the comment. I know some folks that are on the backend of this - and while its true that not many have seen much savings so far, my understanding is that this is about to change. The datasets are getting to the point where the reported risk models are legitimately predictive - and the major attributing factors are (in no particular order): (1) what time of day are you driving, (2) how long are you driving (time in minutes ~ exposure) and (3) how many miles are being driven (again ~ exposure). Apparently things like max g-forces (and frequency) and absolute speed are not strongly correlated with risk. Thats just what I hear - so I'm curious to see what comes of it. I strongly suspect all insurance will be telematic device driven shortly (within 5-10 years) because of the significant improvement in risk-pricing (and these companies compete like cats and dogs for customers - so those savings are very likely to be passed along).

Just my 10 bits.

I am shocked my insurance BARELY went up $200 over a year coming from a '16 M235 to a '15 GTS. $1,200 a year for 300k/300k with 500/100 deductibles. Age 32 with a clean record.
