(+1 on T having the ticking noise at cold start after sitting for 3 days+. Noise goes away after warms up).

I thought it was normal since it goes away after warm up. Subscribed.

I have the same thing. Though the car does not have to sit for days for it to happen. This only started once the cooler weather arrived, which is to say in the last week and a half or so. And like previous poster it goes away as soon as the engine warms up.

Another thread on the same thing:

I believe there are different variances of what people are labeling as tapping versus what it may be actually. Some noises after startup are pretty normal for most engines, once it gets louder or more persistent becomes more an issue. Sounds like there hasn’t been a solid answer as of yet though

You have 273 miles. Relax. Give it time to break in.

Change the oil at 1,000 miles.
Fill with Mobil 5W50. (Unless you drive in the arctic circle)
Bam!

Oil viscosity changes almost never fix ticking noises with these 911s. My 996 has 60k miles and ticks when cold if I start it and don’t drive off immediately. Most people think the ticking is lifters, but it’s usually pistons/rods. Not much can be done about it.

If the car is under warranty or new, I’d be looking for an exploratory fix.

Some ticking can also come from a loose chain (tensioner) which sure is not a case for a new car. The sound is different than lifters, but unless you know them some folks are confused.

Hey

Since the covid 19 lock downs I have been driving my 17 4s a lot less, and first noticed the engine ticking now that my car sits 5-7 days straight. Are other owner’s noticing engine ticking now that all cars are beening “lightly used” on a daily basis?

Has there been an established repair, if any is required, that others have benefited from ?

My engine ticking is on the passenger side, fairly loud, changes with rpm and goes away once engine oil temp is around 70 degrees c.

the consensus is that this is normal?... but it does not feel right.

‘neighbour has 14 c4 (3.4l engine) and he started his for me after being idle for 2 weeks - his lifter ticked as well but only for 5-10 seconds then idled normally. Mine takes all the way up to engine temp to get better does this indicate something could be wrong ?

Sounds normal.

What oil are you using?

How many miles on current oil interval?

Switch over to Porsche A40 approved Mobil 5W50. May be on sale now at Napa Auto Parts, too.

Comparing your car to your neighbor's car is not really a fair comp (3.0L small turbo vs a 3.4 L asperated motor). But close, and a good idea/test.

Using 0w40 Porsche approved a40 mobile 1.

3000km since last interval.

I do need the 0w40 because the winter temp here falls to -20 to -25 c sometimes.

I switched to Liqui Moly 5W40. No ticking even after sitting for one week. I buy the kit at FCP Euro and bring to dealer.
