Default 991.2 GTS cold start up engine ticking

Hi All, just got my new GTS 2 Cab last week. I've now got about 400km on the odo and noticed this quite loud engine ticking when I started it up this morning. You could hear it when driving as well. Went away after engine warmed up.

I spoke to my SA and sent him a video but he didn't seem too concerned. I did have some cold start ticking in my 997S but nothing like this.

Welcome to the nuances of the 911. It's normal.

Here is my car, albeit a 991.1 which is noiser than the .2.

Here's a long and fairly recent thread on the same subject if that helps: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/9864...old-start.html

As others stated, this seems to be normal. It made me wonder at first as well. My .2 C2S is more likely to tick when cold after sitting for several days, which it does regularly. I think it must have something to do with the position the lifters are in when the engine shuts down and/or if the oil was aerated at all after shut down; I figure one or both of those factors has something to do with the oil draining down and causing that tick. But to be honest, I really have no idea what I'm talking about as far as the goings-on inside the engine that cause that tick.

However, it's worth noting that (largely because I'm in a warm climate....Houston, TX) I decided to change to Mobil 5W-50 at my first oil change back in June. I don't believe I've heard the ticking since then but if there still is ticking, it's less frequent and/or less noticeable. That 0W-40 vs 5W-50 debate is a whole separate issue that has been beat to death on this forum but so far, the 5W-50 seems to be working great for me. I did a Blackstone oil analysis on the factory fill 0W-40 and will do another on my next change, so it'll be interesting to see if there are any noticeable differences in the results. Whatever that measure was for "shear" was just above the minimum of 11 on my first change, and I expect a higher figure on the next change with the slightly thicker oil.

Thanks for those quick responses!! I won't hit the panic button just yet Just another quick comment, my only complaint is that the engine seems to be too quiet inside the car even with the SE turned on. I remember my SE on my 997S took awhile to 'get loud' , is that the case with the new 991.2?

I believe there are two sound symposers in the .2. The second one opens up in sport + mode which brings more engine noise into the vehicle cabin. Play around with that and see if you notice a difference.

Tip up the sunroof and you'll hear more of what you expect. You can also crack open a window or two. That's what I do. When I get on a fast highway, ill close em to block the wind noise. But when I slow down, I open them again.

Yep, normal. Mine does it after more than 3-4 days in the garage. Gone by the time the oil has got to temperature.

I don't hear that much ticking on startup. I hear more after I turn the engine off.

That's the hot engine/exhaust components cooling down.
I occasionally get the ticking at startup. It's rather embarrassing when driving through the neighborhood. It's gone within a few minutes.

since the covid 19 lock downs I have been driving my 17 4s a lot less, and first noticed the engine ticking now that my car sits 5-7 days straight. Are other owner’s noticing engine ticking now that all cars are beening “lightly used” on a daily basis?

my engine ticking is on the passenger side, fairly loud, changes with rpm and goes away once engine oil temp is around 70 degrees c.

the consensus is that this is normal... but it does not feel right.

‘neighbour has 14 c4 (3.4l engine) and he started his for me after being idle for 2 weeks - his lifter ticked as well but only for 5-10 seconds then idled normally. Mine takes all the way up to engine temp to get better.

Soul to the rescue! A pair of high flow cats will make it sound a lot better (tons of clips here and elsewhere to listen..."search" is your friend) and 5/50 will almost eliminate the ticking - I had mine swapped to it at its first oil change so I can vouch for it.
