Default Unity Web Player & 360 Configurator

When I moved to Windows 10 with Edge, I kept a Firefox browser so that I could use porscheusa's 360 configurator with the Unity Web Player. A couple of days ago, I allowed a Firefox upgrade and then discovered that Unity is no longer supported with the new version. Does anyone know if any current web browsers still support Unity so that we can continue to access the 360 view? I hope Porsche is working on a new way to show the full 360 configurator as Unity support is quickly being phased-out by all browsers and the product is being end-of-lifed. From Unity's website:
In late 2013, Google announced a plan to deprecate support for NPAPI plugins (such as our Unity Web Player) in its Chrome browser. Now, it is September 2015, and Google has released Chrome 45 with NPAPI plugin support removed. Also, other browser vendors have started matching Google’s decision: Microsoft is shipping its new Windows 10 operating system with the new default browser, Edge, which has removed support for plugins like the Unity Web Player. Today, Mozilla has announced a plan to phase out plugin support in Firefox.

Clearly, the web ecosystem is moving away from browser plugins and we are quickly approaching the point where no current browsers will still be able to run plugin content. Given this outlook, Unity is diverting resources into alternative web technologies and will begin the end-of-life process of the Unity Web Player plugin.

Today we are announcing the first step in that end-of-life process, the deprecation of the Web Player. When Unity marks a feature as deprecated it means that the use of the feature is no longer recommended and that the feature will be removed in a future release. For the Web Player, Unity 5.2 and 5.3 will still be able to publish Web Player content, but Unity 5.4 (to be released in March 2016) will no longer ship with Web Player support. The Web Player will then become an unsupported product.

I use google chrome for my normal browsing but Internet Explorer 11 for the 3D configurator for this very reason. IE11 has no issues.

Needless to say I am on Explorer most of the time.

Chrome on Mac still works. Neither browser work very well on Mac, though.

Overall it was a mistake rendering to an exotic plugin. They should have used WebGL in the first place. If they really needed a bit of a game engine around it they should have used something more open where the user isn't locked into a random piece of vendor thing that is influenced by too many parties.

I suspect that Porsche didn't build this, they probably bought the 3D builder from somebody who did it for fun for actual Unity (not the web version).

Don't forget that Windows 10 ships with both MS Edge and IE 11 installed. Edge seems to be the default browser, and it doesn't seem to like the Unity plugin.
If you go to the start menu and start typing "iex" it will show the legacy Internet Explorer browser, which, at least as of today still seems to work with the Unity plugin for the 360 view.

In Windows 10 switch the default browser from Edge to IE11. Just go to settings and enter browser in the search and the option to make the change will pop up.

That 3D configurator is pretty slow to load as well.

Thanks gents. All helpful. I also found that the new version of Firefox had de-activated the Unity Player add-on. I was able to go into the settings menu and re-activate it.

Firefox 48.0.2 on Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Unity still works as advertised on the configurator page. In fact, a little better; previously it would slow things down badly, but now it's pretty quick.

(Though there does seem to be an issue with getting to the configurator. If I pick "Build your Own" from the strip of cars on the main P-page, nothing happens. I have to select the model from the dropdown and then build it.)

Is there any way to get 360 view to work on an iOS device? I would love to play around with it on my iPad, but haven't had any luck yet.

I'm also using Firefox 48.0.2 which was released 8/24/'16 and, I think, the latest version. At least that's what their website is telling me. And using windows 10.
To get Unity Player to work (and the 360 thing), I have to perform one step immediately after selecting "Build your own." In the upper left corner of the screen, just below the Firefox symbol, there's a symbol which looks something like a car battery. When I click on that, I get a drop down box which asks if I want to activate Unity Player. I click on the "Allow Now" button and I'm (usually) off to the races.
If you haven't yet, you may want to try that.

Nice thread, I have not been able to load the 360 configurator for a long time, since I have installed Window 10.

In the new version of Firefox, you can go to settings>add-ons and re-activate the Unity Player add-on permanently.
