Some guys don't get it
A friend who is a Big fan of practical "problem - free" Japanese cars, can't fathom the idea of spending $100-150k on a 911.
His take is that it's a lot of money just to show off and look cool .
I suppose a lot of people out there think Porsche owners just want to show off .
Clearly they don't get it...I mean just look at this forum!
I've never really cared about what people think, and the last thing that I would care about in a 911 would be the showing off factor.

It's the same argument people had against buying a Mac a few years ago. Everyone would say how silly it was to pay $2000 for a laptop, when the PC laptops had "similar" specs and were half the price. But you get what you pay for. Build quality, feel, operating system, etc. Some people just can't get past a price to think about what you're getting for that price. But I guess that's why we live in a very disposable society now - just buy the cheaper thing no matter what - even if you're buying many in the future to replace them. When you could have just saved your money and bought one quality item.
I'd rather buy one expensive very special thing than a dozen cheap, disposable things. Whether it be computers, cars, or whatever we spend our hard-earned money on.

Expensive cars are an indulgence. People have different indulgences they spend money on. Some don't have any at all and have more money. Enjoy life anyway you wish.

No soul. People with much more money & life experience spend vast sums of money over sticker for Porsches every day... Even ones 10, 20 or 30 years old.
How much has the 1996 Honda Accord appreciated? Compared to a 1996 993..... He doesn't see the matrix, prob took the red pill. Has nothing to do with showing off.

You don't make money on these cars. Even 993's. Had you thrown that money into any investment, you'd be further ahead.
Cars are a splurge. No way around it. A great one and hobby though!! Love to

I have had, and have a stable of P car. several 930s and other very collectible cars. I enjoy, and drive them. No garage queens for me. I have never, not once made money on a car. tax, insurance, proper maintenance, use, etc... adds up. But for me they are not investments. they are toys. If you are fortunate to have the opportunity to drive and enjoy these cars you are blessed. They are wonderful, ridiculous at times, over priced at times, and amassing always. The collector game is very different from the enthusiast.

It all depends on how much your eyes light up when things get fast and the scenery starts blurring The sales guy on my 991 test drive said some people get it and some don't. Coming from very fast motorcycles, my test drive in a 911 was to see if the car was worth it in terms of performance and excitement compared to a bike. My first trip around a long onramp gave me my answer. Yes! Acceleration not quite the same as a bike, but the cornering was awesome. So I started the test drive kind of skeptical, but finished it knowing I must have one of these cars! It has NOTHING to do with showing off and everything to do with enjoying a car made to go fast!

Japanese cars are great dependable cars. But as someone has already said most don't have any soul. Most people only care about getting from point A to B and don't get any enjoyment out of driving.

Lets not kid ourselves, a new Porsche is a pretty expensive indulgence and whether we like it or not there is a little bit of "showing off" with an expensive car like a 911. I happen to be very passionate about cars and have no problem spending a lot of money on them even though some people find it ridiculous. But just the same, I see people spend a lot of money on other hobbies or passions, that I have a hard time understanding.
At the end of the day, it's your money and you are free to spend it however you want. I just picked up my 991 C4S a month ago and my wife is annoyed that I'm already talking about my next car.

That's all you have to say. I'm not judging those who don't get it, but frankly trying to convince the uninspired the 911 experience is worth the price is a fool's errand.
Just smile, nod, and tell your buddy he wins the "bench racing championship". Then go for a drive.
