although I think that the Macan/Cayenne 6cylTT engine and the 9A2 in the base
and S 911s suggests that (larger turbos &) software is the way ahead to differentiate models engine performance.

To stay relevant, established tuners will have to push the envelope even further. Quad turbos or a turbo/supercharger hybrid anyone?

It's because they need to reach an emissions target over the entire brand. So I'm guessing Porsche can meet the brand targets while still keeping the GTS and GT3 cars non-turbo.

While they're at it can they please put the 6-speed MT back in. Now that the 911R is apparently getting it seems like most of the engineering would be done.

The 991.2 GTS will be Turbo with a boost in power. This is just my speculation, nothing from the cleaning lady on the GTS.
But bear in mind that Porsche's GT department has been allowed to play by different rules compared to the rest of the 911 line. They also do not play a huge role in the company's carb ratings because of small production numbers. With that said,Turbo is unavoidable at some point,if not for regulations, but for extracting more power out of the flat 6.

The GTS has nothing to do with the GT department in Weissach. It is being built from start to finish on the regular 911 production line AFAIK. Of course, one could argue that the GT cars bodies are being built and assembled on the regular production line as well, although they are using bespoke parts and R&D from Weissach.

The GTS is not a GT car. It does (like all Porsches) benefit from the trickle down effect though.

The GTS is the 911 equivalent of the McDonal'ds Extra Value Meal.

I agree with the others. While the GTS is a very potent car, it does not share a number of the more distinguishing features from Motorsport and GT cars, including different engine (e.g. no true dry sump lubrication), suspension, no Clubsport package (only ROW unfortunately), rear seats, reduced steering feel, no RWS, etc.

when the cayenne GTS was in the making, all rumors were stating that it will have a V8 NA engine, came out to be the same V6 as the S with a bit more power, I think its going to be just the same scenario..

On the second point, you need to re-read my post. I've meant PAG will eventually be forced to switch to Forced Induction in order to make more power out of the flat 6,if not for regulations.
