Here's the deal. I have a 2006 Boxster S with 24k miles and a 2012 Audi A7 with 25k miles, both in good shape. It's getting hard to keep 2 cars here in Chicago now that I have 2 kids under 3. I am convinced that i can satiate my Porsche lust with a CPO c4 or c4s and use it as a "family car", i.e. 2 car seats in back.
First, am I nuts? 2nd, should I wait a few months to see if inventory picks up? I also want a manual trans. You guys are the experts, so I'll patiently await your advice...
Not unless you don't want those kids ever to grow and stay the same size, you have a limited amount of time before getting all four people from the family to fit comfortably.

Yeah you might be nuts No way I can see a 911 as a 4 person family car. I am 6'2" and when I sit in a 911 it is not possible for anyone to sit behind me as there is zero leg room for the back seat behind me. Car seats sure but that is very temporary. Time for a minivan!!!!
If you have kids, you are better off keeping the 911 as a third vehicle. I suppose technically you can make it work, but the impracticality of having only one "real" family car will become a thorn.
It's not the most practical solution but what's the downside, you can always sell the car with your cost being the depreciation?
You have a couple or three years before the children out grow the car. Personally, I would want more metal and bulk around my family, but thats a personal decision of course.
911 rear seats are for putting your shopping bags in, not transporting anyone. When my kids were little, we tried to haul them around in a 993 C4S. They were miserable, even at just 40" tall ! Better to get a nice BMW M3 or Audi RS series car if you want a sporty family hauler.
Yup many agree. In Truth I would buy a used Panamera Turbo of some sort or and older S or 4S with a V8 engine. For some reason I don't like the ixea of the V6 S model Panamera's.
You can't rationalize your 911 purchase. It is far from a practical car. I see you live in Chicago. I assume you still get lots of snow. An AWD with snow tires will help, but your ground clearance is tiny. Your traction will diminish significantly when there's several inches of snow, and it starts to push up on your car's undercarriage.
Two suggestions: 1. Keep your Audi and trade-in your Boxster for a C4S; 2. if you like Audis buy either an S7 or RS5. Of course the RS5 doesn't offer Porsche handling, but it certainly provides great acceleration and great handling for a car of that size.
It's not just about fitting your kids in the back - you're hauling your kids and whatever gear they have with them. And even if you travel light, say to the park, you only have so much space. Then there is getting them in and out of the seats every single time you go anywhere. I suppose that you could make it work but it might just suck the joy out of the car in a very short period of time.

You could get an RS5 but is there enough room in the back for kids and the next five years?
Echo everyone's comments about the 911. Rear seats are useless for anything but a gym bag.
Re: the RS5; I have one of those. Rear seats are more useable, but getting in and out of them is challenging and not something you want to do regularly. If I were the OP, given your constraints, I'd go test drive a Macan Turbo.
I am truly overwhelmed with the response ...and a bit shocked. you guys are quite rational!
Forgot to mention that my wife has an A4 avant, so we would still have another car. That's why i want to get rid of the third car. I would not need to take my kids much as we live in Lincoln park and really walk most everywhere. 90% would be for solo commute. Sorry that I didn't mention that.
Also, a while back i had an 03 C4s and loved it. Audi is not the same!
It is doable but having it as your ONLY option will be miserable on days with substantial snow or when you need to carry anything in addition to passengers. Also with such little kids it will be hard to buckle them in and get them in and out. Once they are a little older and don't need the car seat it is much easier but there's not much room behind the driver's seat. I have an older 335 sedan that I keep for winter and when I need more utility. If I could only have one car I wouldn't have bought a 991. I probably would have gone with an M3 or maybe a Macan turbo.
