Default Porsche Entry and Drive - Am I Missing a Part?

Regardless, I still think that trim piece is what needs to be removed IF needing to remove the dummy key with the tool. Pretty sure that is what the OP asked.
Yes. The alternate method without the tool works perfectly.

From what I read into it, the OP noticed the trim piece missing which could have been not put back when someone tried the tool method.

We have a 2012.5 991. My service tech showed me this "trick". Works every time I've tried it.

Here's another pic of the part you seem to be missing... Tiny plastic cover.

So, the dealer had this part in stock...$12.79!!

I gritted my teeth and bought it. Got it home, had trouble getting it in and broke one of the pins off. ARGH.

I'm understanding why the previous owner left it off.

Is there a trick to putting it in?

Same thing happened to me.

I just had to try taking the key out, for no good reason other than to satisfy my curiosity. I am the one who posted in the thread about the 'super secret no key in your pocket turn on the ignition' method that it did not work on my car. Never got the second error, and my car spells recognized with a 'z', which obviously must be the issue .

Anyway, another point added to the 'don't touch it you'll break it' philosophy (that I have adamantly ignored my entire life).
I ended up putting a very tiny piece of 2 sided tape on it and I will never touch it again!
