The X5 is good for about 10,000 miles. Then begins to fall apart.

The Mercedes AMG wagons are built like tanks and go like a scorched dog. There are wagon people and non wagon people for sure. I loved my wife's V70R wagon. That car would scoot. It was my compromise at the time (2005) instead of the E55 wagon (price).

FYI. I only had this car for a week and I didn't beat on it at all because I had already owned an E63 wagon and had another sports car at the time.

However.

I heard through the grapevine that this car was in an accident a few months after I had it. I am NOT 100% sure of this and I CANNOT confirm this except for what a different journalist told me later, so it may be pure 100% speculation. However, company/press cars involved in accidents sometimes present with a clean Carfax because they are usually untitled. Plus, I think we all know how most journalists drive.

If you're interested, definitely get a PPI.

Hey Doug: I enjoy your videos & auto blog. By the way, what type manager job did you have at PCNA & how did you like that job?

Default America hates wagons

Such a shame that we can't get all those cool euro wagons in North America. Wagons sell well in Europe and Canada but the US has an aversion to the body style.

Very strange.

Take a wagon and bulk it up, lift the suspension and add 4 wd, call it an SUV - all the while killing most performance potential, adding mucho weight and hurting MPG and Americans will buy them in spades.

Even in Canada I have many friends that loudly declare that they would never be "caught dead in a wagon" while climbing into their BMW X3's.

Wagons rock - SUVs suck. Yet these really are just two different versions of the same vehicle style.

Here we have a seriously modded (supercharged, etc) '01 Focus wagon that pulls big MPG and cargo numbers yet still offers exciting performance.

Off topic, but Purrybonker is great alias. Conjures up all sorts of images, some x-rated. What's it mean?

purrybonker you are so right! It's a plot by the American car makers to convince us that "sport utility" actually means something. I'm envious of the choices every time I visit Europe.

I highly recommend the Volvo V60 Polestar, if you can even find one. It's drive shocked the hell out of me!!! For 62k, it's a pretty good bang for the buck. IMHO...
