Default Thumbs Up

Got a thumbs up from another Porsche for the 1st time today (996). I always try to do the same for all the Porsche sports cars. Just wanted to share the nice gesture from a fellow Porsche owner.

It's a really great tradition, but getting more and more uncommon. A smile and nod, a small wave, thumbs-up, a headlight flash - all good ways to acknowledge a fellow 911 owner.

Unfortunately, the number of times it gets acknowledged seems to be going down too. Half of the time I see a look of confusion - like, "who are you...i'm pretty sure I don't know you."

Thumbs up is the international "atta boy". The traditional 911 greeting is a wave, or headlight flash (never both). Not just any wave either, no back and forth, just a discrete little half salute sort of gesture. At least it was like that back in the day. Nowadays, to paraphrase Monty Python, oh what dark days these are when people can go around giving thumbs up to a Porsche as if its a wave.

I was stopped at an intersection and got a honk from a GT3 crossing in the other lane. I hardly ever wave any more because I never get any back.

I always thought Porsche was the headlight flash. When I owned Corvette's it was the wave. Usually I'm going too fast to notice.

I'm not sure there's universally accepted etiquette by marque. But I would be delighted to find out that I'm wrong.

I reserve headlight flash for really good two lane roads and the subtle wave for all else. And agreed, sort of the motorcycle or parade queen wave. My own etiquette, I suppose.

I go for the trifecta. Thumbs up with right hand, wave with left and simultaneously flash high beams with my knees. This works great until you crash into a utility pole.

Reach outside and pat the roof a couple of times if the window is open. Means a tip of your hat.

I get a lot of thumbs up from non- P cars. I give the half wave back. Or point / thumbs up if it's a comparable car.
