Today I was driving in town and noticed an older fox series Mustang behind me in the next lane over. I thought to myself, "That looks like a nice, clean Mustang." After a half-mile or so it caught up and passed me in the normal flow of traffic. It was a nice one. As he got just past he stuck his arm out and gave me a long thumbs down (10-15 seconds). He turned right at the next street and was gone leaving me puzzled. Don't "car guys" like, or at least appreciate, any nice or interesting car? I know I do. I guess he was trying to hurt my feelings. Good luck there--I'm in a Carrera S after all!! I was hoping to catch up, roll down my window and give him a thumbs up for his well preserved Mustang.
Why do we call putting our window down "rolling" when we haven't actually rolled a window down in decades?

Speak for yourself, Mr. Too-Good-To-Roll-My-Window-Down. I had a Miata track car till not too long ago with roll-up windows. Bought it new in 1994. And last year I bought a 2014 Wrangler ****** Wheeler Edition and saved $2100 by not checking the box that included power windows, doors and mirrors. (Doors are rarely on anyway, but when they are, I have to "roll the windows down" the old fashioned way."

The Mustang is a muscle car. Most of those guys either see the newest 911 (currently the 991, but doesn't matter) as a rich snobs way of making sure the world knows how great he is, or at least are genuinely puzzled why anyone would so vastly overpay for a car they see as a slow underpowered poser.
When it comes to being a "car guy" sorry, but you just can't buy that. Most people expect a new car to look new, have no idea how to tell a really nicely optioned and well-cared for example from the rest of the pack, and so see your 991 not as evidence of your being a "car guy" but just another rich guy flaunting his success. Remember, in real life the muscle car view is the norm.
Older car, different story. Pretty much everyone knows you don't see anyone in a 30+ year old car that looks like new unless he's a car guy. (Or the superior subset thereof, a Porsche guy.) The same Porsche that got the thumbs down from the muscle car crowd new gets nothing but grins and thumbs up when they see it looking just as good 30 years later. Trust me.

Chuck,
I have friends with muscle cars, hot rods, Corvettes, etc. and we all like one another's cars. So I guess that's my world view. If the Mustang guy and I were to meet at a car event not seeing each other's car I'm certain we would find common ground (cars) and he would recognize I enjoy cars and am not a snob. Oh well, myopia has its own rewards.
You're right about old Porsches, my '89 Carrera was very nice and universally loved and admired. I feel I'm the same car guy with regards to my 991 (bought used BTW) as the '89 or Cayman S--and the S2000 and MR2 SC before that (a perfect, low miler that I couldn't resist buying from a client).
Biker,
Roll on brother!

My guess is that Mustang guy was more likely challenging you to race or try to run him down...nothing serious.

Could not agree more with 991 Turbo S. The loser in the mustang is a loser plain and simple. Jealous and insecure......I appreciate all types of cars but Porsche a little more

I believe it's the person, and not the car. Cars don't make people dicks, but dicks give cars a bad name.
Cars don't have personalities.
A dick is a dick, and they come in all sizes (and drive all kinds of cars)!
