Default Price for Porsches in Australia...out of this world.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw the price of a 991 Carrera S in Australia.
It almost brought tears to my eyes.
It kinda makes you wonder if Australians get paid a lot more than Americans or do they just get ripped off with the prices of automobiles?
A 991 Carrera S sells in Australia for $265,866 with no options ticked off and a manual transmission.
The Turbo S cab sells for a staggering $498,796, with no options.
I guess Ferrari's are over a million dollars.
And I thought Canadians got ripped off. Ouch.
Americans pay for a 991 Carrera what Australians pay for a Toyota Avlon.
Crazy.

I am not certain but I think Australia has a very extensive tax on sports cars. Making them extremely expensive.

US has one of the lowest prices in the world. Most Asian countries have similar or even higher prices than Australia.

Australia is almost identical to Japan when it comes to Porsche.

In US, I could get gt3 with price of loaded c2 or base c4s.

Thinking to move there someday :P

If so, can you still easily see new Porsches in Australia? Or are they extremely rare sightings when compared with other countries? I'm curious.

(You are currently living in Australia, right?)

They don't earn more there.

Was just back there a week ago. Porsches are no where near as prevalent as where I live now - but that may not be representative of the entire US either.

Aussies love their cars - V8s, utes etc. Real shame the Aussie made Holden (GM) Commodore and Ford Falcon are no longer going to be made there. People think a Mustang is cool and exotic and can't believe how cheap there are here. Still seemed to be more of an Asian influence (as you would expect) and boy racer styling there.

I remember dreaming of an M3 as a kid - that would cost north of $150K in Aus. back in the day.

My brother in law is coming to visit next year and it's been his lifelong dream to drive a Porsche. I'm somewhat holding it over his head.

We really have it lucky here from an affordability of automobile perspective. Singapore is even worse than Aus though - crazy.

On a side note - as folks from the US will find this funny - when I was just back it seems Corona is now being marketed as a premium beer at $5 a bottle. Now that is messed up!!

So what are the good used Porsches going for down under? $90k for a nice SC? $180k for a 993?

I have first hand experience of car prices in Australia being an expat now living in Europe. I just took delivery of almost a fully loaded 4s which cost 145,000 euro or the equivalent of AUD$200,000. If I was to buy the exact same car in Australia, it would cost AUD$350,000. 75% more than Europe.

Not the most expensive country in the world to buy a 991 (Singapore is even more expensive) but still exorbitantly expensive compare to the USA........but....it is my firm belief that the rest of world effectively subsidises the cost of cars like Porsche in the USA.

I don't think the USA market subsidized anything. I'd imagine it is a source of incredible revenue and profits for Porsche. Imagine their prices if there was no US market...

It's obvious they charge more in DR away smaller markets and to a point that's logistically fine. But the prices people have mentioned are flat out gouging and it's ridiculous.

What about importing one from somewhere else? While shipping isn't free it's really not that expensive. Mainland US-Hawaii ship it yourself for example is very reasonable, like a couple grand for a car I think. I don't see how Hawaii to OZ could be 200,000 more lol

Countries don't subsidize the cost of them, they just don't tax the hell out of them! In these other countries, you're just lining the pockets of the governments.

These crooked countries have it figured out. You import anything, they're going to still hit you with the insane tax! You're screwed regardless.

It's not like Porsche is gouging anyone. It's the countries taxing them!

I've bought two new 911's in Australia. Well, one demo and one new. You just suck it up and spend the money. Theres plenty on the road, just like you see plenty of Ferraris and the odd McLaren in singapore where they cost north of $1m.

It all works out in the wash anyway. In Australia there's universal health care and if you want private insurance its way less than in the US. As in 1/4 -1/2 the price.

The health issue can add up. The company I retired from recently sent my cost for health care through them for 2015. If I chose the same coverage I had with them it would be $1400/mo. for a single policy. Goes to $2700/mo. if I added the wife. So if we are looking at the cost of financing a car for 5 years tack on another $84000 or $162000 for the same time frame in health insurance. Fortunately I don't need their insurance anymore.
