Just got my first 911 -- a total snore

@Larry, youre comparing apples to oranges. A better comparison would be the M3 to Panamera (not turbo). An M3 can hang pretty well with the 911 Carrera 3.4L but NOTHING in the BMW line can hang with the GT3.

All I know is when I was driving it on the Ring, I felt like Jeremy Clarkson in that Diesel Jaguar he piloted round there every time a GT3 passed me!
and...
at the end of the day ... its still crap!

@Larry, also a fair comment. Team BMW has drunk the kool aide and really believe none better. Most of my M3 friends have put in SC and big brake kits.
I'm a Porsche nut to the bone. First Porsche 87 924S, 170k miles....what a fun introduction to the welcome insanity!!

I think BMW M division went through the transition with the E92 (and M5) that Porsche are now going thru with the 991 GT3 ... its a sea change in philosophy resulting in very different products, still great they just dont appeal to me anymore

Three Wheelin'
It was very different when BMW started the M3 line (E30) and peaked in its EVOIII guise - it was lighter than a 964 RS with a superior g/box. As far as i am concerned it all went south after that (compared to 911).

Nordschleife Master
fair comment... although I dont think that's how BMW or the motoring press position it ...

E92 M3 is a worthless piece of crap on either the Ring or Spa IMO ... its way too heavy compared to a 911, its brakes are worthless after a lap or two at speed, and the traction control is too intrusive ... DCT is adequate at best, and who needs a couple of motorized 'plastic coat hangers' to help you put your seatbelt on ... if the car lost 500lbs and got some decent brakes and TC it could be a contender.

I'm very sorry guys, but, after having many 911 as daily, and this, non stop for 30 years, I can only write and sign "+1" when someone wrote "PDK is boring".
For me, (after 20'000 miles of Panamera 4S) YES, BIG TIME, PDK IS BORING.
This is just one step in the direction of a GOOGLE Driver Less option.
If you are in the market and decide to buy a Cadillac, then, OK, PDK would be great for that kind of cars.
But, please, for a 911, ..this is the beginning of the end ..of Porsche.

Burning Brakes
Automatics = progress towards driverless cars = we'll all be hooked up to virtual reality machines eating mind control pellets soon.
Then after that they might even do away with the "feedback" (LOL) of hydraulic power steering assist.
OMG, the call is coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!!
Funny thing is, the hate on automatics was nonexistent back when they were slower and less economical crappy shifting slush boxes. But now that they're pretty great, they're the devil's workshop.

A 7-speed manual in a Porsche 911 is an answer to a question I've never heard a 911 owner asking - anywhere (alright maybe there's a liberal politician who happens to own one).
Further, if you don't think liberal politics are progressing toward driverless cars you must not be paying attention. Auto accidents are the 5th leading cause of death in America and once driverless cars are feasible and able to do everything a regular car can do more safely we'll be lucky to even have an option to take manual control of the car.

[QUOTE=destaccado;11716412]I'm pretty sure that the hate on automatics came because they started to be the only option. Back in the day if you didn't want an automatic didn't have to choose one.

Yes. But back in the day an automatic was an automatic. As in, hydraulic automatic. What most everyone today still gets in their mind when they hear the word, "automatic".
The problem with the automatic was it ruined the drivers ability to control weight transfer, the very key to performance driving. That's it. Automatics are GREAT for straight-off-the-line acceleration, pulling boat trailers out of lakes, that kind of thing. But they are terrible at the kind of throttle control that is essential to controlling a cars attitude during cornering.
Some people miss all that, conflate PDK with automatic, get all mad and frustrated. Using "automatic" when you mean PDK only validates and stokes their anger. Don't encourage them.
