New 2014 Targa - Wind Noise
Has anyone on the forum had an opportunity yet to drive the new Targa? A couple of the reviews that I have recently read mention the issue of wind noise while driving with the roof open. One reviewer went so far as to say that "the wind noise is almost insufferable", starting at as low as 40 mph. Another reviewer said that the wind noise was so bad, he had to close the roof. This is extremely disappointing to me as I absolutely love the look of the car and I was very excited about the possibility of purchasing the Targa. Would like to hear some of your thoughts on this issue.

I think moving the side mirrors from the corner of the door, down to the body was a mistake on the 991. I often park my 991 next to a 997 with sport design mirrors - the 997 mirrors look better (no black plastic underside) and are located in a position where I expect they can help deflect air into the cabin that should be able to reduce the 'thumping' that occurs with the windows down.
I think the body mounted mirrors were a design mistake, just like the fried eye headlights on the 996. I hope Porsche will revert to the old, better design on the 991.2

The Targa has this little "wind deflector" on the windshield.
Maybe it was not extended when the reviewer drove the car?
I heard that it was a challenge to make the Targa "acoustic-friendly" but from Porsche will never put a car on the market in which you can only drive 40mph...

Burning Brakes
The 918 has a similar device which I was told if not installed you get intolerable buffeting above 50 mph. Not sure if it is auto or a piece you actually snap in place. Looks oddly out of place in the pictures I've seen.

the wind deflector atop the windshield frame in the new Targa must be manually extended , it doesn't automatically pop up like on most opened sunroofs
my guess is this was on purpose so that the opened up Targa looks sleeker for marketing's ( and medias' ) " beauty shots"
perhaps some journalists who have reported " ear thunder " at moderate crusing speeds were playing games on their smart phones or snoring during this bit of info being given during the press intro

991s and 997s both have mirrors mounted on the door. The 991 has them mounted on the body of the door where aerodynamically they would appear to have little influence on the air coming into the cockpit. The 997 has them mounted on the door in the corner of.the window, where it looks as if it would have much more effect on wind buffeting. Even putting my hand where the 997 mirrors would be reduces the cabin buffeting at ~90mph.
I think the 997 with sport design mirrors also looks better when compared next to a 991 with regular mirrors. The distance they moved is only a few inches, but the wind buffeting is a serious issue.

If the Targa is slightly better than the Cab, then it's a quiet car. Top down, windows & windscreen up, I can easily be on my bluetooth at 60mph+
Tapeworm: I feel the exact opposite. I dislike the corner mounted (albeit to the door) mirrors. I can't see Porsche putting door mounted mirrors on their new cars and race cars if there was an air flow advantage to corner mounted mirrors.
To me, they are getting back to perfecting their near perfect car.....the 993

Eduardo, nice summary with those pictures.
Has anyone driven one with the manually extended deflectors up & down to see the difference?
As an aside, wouldn't a Targa with all the 991 50th retro bits look great!

Three Wheelin'
Given Porsche recent history with special edition cars I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced a 50th anniversary Targa in 2015/6.
