Built both and there is less then .4 seconds between both. I never owned a porsche. Is there any other differences between either model to justify the 15K difference?

I felt a big difference when I drove both, that difference might be small to some folks, but for me it was worth the extra cost. 50 hp is quite substantial, and you'll get bigger brakes.

 

Find a Porsche dealership that has both variants...test drive both back to back. Find a Porsche salesperson that has a bit of knowledge about his product (may be hard to find)...ask him the differences and then decide for yourself it is worth the extra $$$...

Also, dont forget to take into consideration what you will be mostly using the vehicle for...

The "S" includes a lot of features that are options on the base 991, so take that into consideration along with the different engine.


5:35 he starts talking about the engine and mentions the base engine needs a little more performance.

I've seen other videos and heard from others that are perfectly happy with the performance, so it depends on how it feels to you. Drive both back to back to see for yourself

 

Not IMO, only time I wish I had more horsepower and bigger brakes at the track.

Residuals are higher on a base...

You know, it's Porsche's fault. They should just make one model, average out the difference in HP, put the red brakes on the driver side and PASM on the passenger side. Two exhaust pipes in the middle and half an S on the back

Maybe one color scheme too: just paint each part with a different color.
Interior mixed colors too

You don't need what you get with an "S" for the extra $15k, but what you get is worth every penny.

Try them both, get what you want, and good luck...no wrong answer.

 

Not to go off subject but I driven a caymen s at the dealer the other day. Wow. Going off a spec sheet it wasn't appealing but driving it was amazing. I was told that the 991 will depreciate less then 981. I buy based on cost to own more then cost to buy. Plus I will buy one that is a 12.5 or 13 versus brand new. Any thoughts? By the way. I was bitten by the stingray bug but my heart keeps coming back to porsche.

I went through this same decision a few months ago. I had a 996 TT and went with a 991 base, primarily because of the price differential. Since I drive the car maybe 4,000 miles per year and never track it, I personally didn't find a need for the additional 50 hp for mostly city driving and my 6 mile round trip drive to work. I do miss the torque of my turbo, but the 991 C2 is plenty fast and fun for me.

 

For me, if it was a pure DD, I would go with the base. For track use, I would go with the S.

Who wants to spend all that money for the 2nd best car? Also, come selling time, a non-S will be harder to get rid of.

If I'm spending nearly $100K on car, it's not on the base version also-ran.

But that's just me. To each his own

 

In these cars it's almost never about "need" but more about "want". The S will give you options as standard that you won't get on the base without paying or not at all. The 50 hp is a very big difference and combined with sport chrono it is a significant difference in driving experience. The base car is a great car though so it's really about what you "want" as nobody really needs these cars. You won't be disappointed either way unless performance is one of the main factors then you will miss not upgrading.
