Wha...?

Okay, but it seems safe to assume that since the "noise" was discovered and not the reason you came in, that it wasn't something you noticed until it was pointed out to you. Or have you even heard it at all? Was this something they noticed and told you about and then you were able to hear it?
Or is it more like they read something off engine data that made them check and confirmed by ear?

Or do they have you on non-disclosure....

My car just blew up. Right before it exploded, it did a funny thing. I hesitate to describe the funny thing though. My dealer is awesome. Go Porsche!

In all seriousness...why post this if you are not going to describe the noise? Makes no sense.

Anything in the top end, they would just replace it. Anything ancilliary- pumps, intake, etc- same thing they would replace. Only thing they would replace the entire engine for would have to be in the case. Within the case it could be pistons, rings, connecting rods or main bearings. Piston or ring problems would cause power loss and roughness that would probably be noticed. Even if not noticed they would cause loss of compression that would be measurable. Nobody would be talking about a noise, they would be talking about compression loss. So that's unlikely. Connecting rods have bearings at both ends. Excessive wear or failure would not cause power loss but would make a noise the trained ear might spot. So there's one possibility. Main bearing failure makes a very distinctive knocking sound that can be heard at idle. Early on though the average driver might not notice it, even when pointed out. There would be no power loss and the car would seem to be running just fine. To the experienced ear though the faint knocking would be enough. Of course it could be something else, but what else would cause Porsche to replace the entire engine? Will they replace an engine for a bad valve train for example?

Some people just don't notice or hear stuff. It's something I have learned as I age. I and my enthusiast friends even differ, as I hear everything. Feel every rattle. Some can just drive and never notice.

OP, do please find out what happened exactly. NO CAR should be grenading out of the blue at 11k miles.

Sounds like you didn't hear any noises and than dealership "discovered it". Could be them covering a major ****-up by the technician; ie forgot to add the oil and took it for a test drive.

I am wondering if Porsche is so willing to replace the engine because it was a demo?

Money shifts during test drives?
