I agree, the car is very impressive and very attractive now.
However I just simply want more power.
I snagged a Cayman S hot lap with one of the Porsche instructors who travels with the World Roadshow. If you can swing something similar, afterward report back on whether you still need more power. I highly doubt it.

I like the way the new Boxster looks, best porsche design at the moment, looks fantastic with 20' wheels. Unfortunately I am taller, couldn't fit in the thing. Plus I have little kids, they like to ride in the back of the 991. However for such a big price difference if I was alot shorter it would be a very tough choice.

I was all set to buy a 991 cabrio, but then I test drove a 981 Boxster S which listed for about $30K less. Since the performance of both cars was similar, and since fortunately I fit comfortably in the car and don't require a back seat, I went with the 981. Although I like the looks of both cars, I too prefer the 981 since it looks a little more modern than the 991. On the other hand some criticize the 981 as having the "Japenese look" whatever that means.

Bottom line is that you can't go wrong with either car, and if you need a back seat, then the 991 is an outstanding choice.

The cayman is very impressive all around. It's easy to drive thru the turns whether you come in slow / fast or exit slow / fast. The 991 of course is best coming fast out out of the turns. Cayman's suspension isn't quite as firm as the 991 and it's not quite as planted at the rear, but it is deceivingly fast and easy to drive, and I have no doubt that with a few more horse power and a firmer suspension it would give the 991 a serious run for it's money (or beat it). And it can be had with similar trim for 1/3 less than the 991. I love the new look (much better and a much more serious car than the previous generation) and if I didn't have a 991 I would give it a VERY serious look. Only downside is the Cayman still doesn't have the charisma of the 911 or those magic rear seats which make the car just right for me.

Cheers ...
I think people that haven't experienced the 991 yet don't realize that the rear seats have even become somewhat functional even for smaller adults. That 4" wheelbase stretch has made a big difference. I have a modestly sized friend that's about 5'11" and ~150lbs that will sit in the back without complaint for fairly long periods of time. I've even had 4 adults in the car before for a quick around the block, although I couldn't stand it very long at 6'2". Two smaller adults on the passenger side are no big deal though.

That reason alone is one major advantage the 991 has over the Cayman in terms of day-to-day usability.

I've driven the previous version of the Cayman, but I'd love to get a 981 on a track to compare the two directly firsthand.

Those wishing 981s had more power especially 718s.
Adding chips makes a differences especially with 718

I would take any 718 Cayman with GT written on it in a heart beat...
Other than that it must be a 911

2022 Cayman GTS 4.0, 394 hp flat six. It’s a GT4 you could drive every day.
Tricky part is finding one to buy, or even a build-slot to order one. Dealers are marking them up, too.

I've been lucky enough to spend some time in a GTS 4.0 on a race track. It's fantastic car and brings the flat six sound that is so essential for me. All things considered, the 911 is still more desirable to me due to 1) it's a 911 and 2) it's more practical due to the larger size.

But there's no losers here, they are both fantastic cars. We are fortunate to be able to choose between them.

My first P car was 718 ( base ) then I bought my second P.car 991.1 carrera S. If I forget their model number from driving point of view both cars make me smile equally both of them are fantastic. Ofcourse 911 is way more powerful but 718 is nimble solid like a small bastard. So driving pleasure I can't make a choice but when it comes to that name nine/ eleven that magical number someone above mentioned we grew up with that name maybe this is the reason I am not sure but my sense is working like Porsche is 911. I still couldn't find what this is but this is the feeling I get most of the time. I think the reason Porsche is producing 911 more than 50 year. The charisma that no other car manufacturer even Porsche itself come closer to that success.
