991 -- An update of the design...to 356ish looks
This is tongue in cheek obviously, but it struck me seeing the pics from Porsche for the 911's 50th, that the lower, wider 991 front shares maybe as much looks with the 356 as it does the ur-911.
Yes, I realize all three look the same to some, but the wider set lights (proportionately) and the hood cut lines in particular are reminiscent between the 356 and 991.

Thankfully the seats are more supportive, the HVAC system much better, and the audio system has made leaps and bounds.
However, the parking brake has reverted to the same location.

You're right! It does look more like a classic 356 from the front. That hood design definitely matches up. At one point, I saw a "spy photo rendering" of the 991 which had the same hood vent as the leftmost 911 picture...I thought it was very striking. I wish that had been incorporated, or at least someone sold a hood which had that design element.
Try as I might, on a manual car, I can't get used to the new location. I miss a traditional pull lever. Or, if the darn thing automatically engaged when turning off the car, I would be perfectly happy.
P.S. My father-in-law has a white 1973 911. Once the weather improves, I intend to post photos of the two cars next to each other.

We used to see exactly that combination of parents and children in my youth, because parents often came from some place overseas where they ate less, and less well, in their own growing years.
Well spotted similarities. Never noticed that before and we have a couple of regulars here with the 356.

Yes, indeed! And I've no doubt that it's purposeful. Porsche have a sense of their history like few other companies and it makes me shake my head whenever someone says Porsche is losing their way with a new model like the 991. Changing to stay modern with the times, yes; forgetting where they've come from, never.

great thread! also agree the similarity is striking.
i love how RL brings out the history and evolution of the 911. as a 911 fan since youth, i would agree that porsche has done an amazing job staying consistent to the 911 design and performance philosophy over the *50* years. that is an incredible feat, given the tendency for automakers to fall prey to the design flaws and automotive gimmickry of the times. also, it is funny how when you look at the different decade models of 911---60s, 70s, 80, 90s etc, they really look like emblems of those times. not sure if it is the car that represents the decade, or vice versa.

I love that about the 911 you can tell it's a 911 no matter how old or new it is. How many other cars are like that?
Chuck-I remember that movie and at first I thought it was a Boxster, but you're correct it was a carrera that transformed into a 356 when he went through the tunnel. I believe it was a beautiful black.
