Help on a 991 Exhaust Upgrade
#46
Here are a few video and sound clips. Most of them are in 'loud' mode. The 'quiet' mode is essentially similar to the PSE quiet mode which is one of the great selling points of the system.
As far as performances are concerned, do not give credit to whoever claims 30...40...50hp improvements even if they show you dyno curves. You'll be lucky if you get 10..15hp's on our cars and this is just fine.
A few months ago, I made a comparison of the claimed "dyno"-measured improvements of 2 xpipe systems that are largely similar.
As you can see vendors make very different claims, both based on 'actual dyno'
Again, AWE claims much more reasonable gains which added to their credibility.
Not advertising for anything in particular, just sharing personal experience. I had tried another valved exhaust before that was too loud for my taste and a side muffler bypass that was simply unbearable.

Thanks for the tip about the AWE exhaust. I found a shop that installs them in Ridgewood Queens and I think my wife knows the owner (they're from the same region of Italy). Small world.

need clarification
Hi,
I am new to the forum. I just recently purchase a 2012 991 cab. I need some help. I want to increase horse power and better sound. What do you suggest I do regarding with it's set up. I don't know if I need to only change the x-pipe and/or both side mufflers. FABSPEED seems to have really good stuff. Do you suggest I go with FABSPEED on just the x pipe or side mufflers, or both. I am also thinking about changing to FABSPEED airintake. Your help is greatly appreciated.

lets compare 997.2 to 991.
in 997.2 all cars had center muffler and side cans... the quad exhaust was "fake".. was single with a dual tip on each side... one would gundo hack the sides to get a decent sound but have to remove the center and replace with X pipe as well to get a great sound... gundo hack is like half removing the side cans.
PSE was a setup where half the exhaust from center would exit directly out the rear, and the other half (or all when pse off) would exit thru the side cans and out the other set of tips.
in 991..
base get the 997.2 setup... center... then all to sides.. and all out 2 tips.
S now get a modified 997.2PSE like setup.. half the exhaust from the center goes out the tips inside.. the other half thru side cans and out the back.. hence your pop and burble off the showroom floor.. also the 991 has amazing headers now.. no more of that water bent perfect this and that to create extra backpressure... but really great free flowing headers....
if you X pipe the center.. it sounds good.. but it's a 6 sided "x pipe" and half will be raw and half thru the sides will be super tame....
seems like you want more.. so i suggest remove the sides.. and get a small piece of pipe fabricated (or someone might make already (secondary bypass)..) and not only do you have a very wlld exhaust.. but lose a BUNCH of weight as well. the 991 bumper is extra reinforced so it wont flap/etc.
so you'll have all exhaust going thru center "resonator" lets call it.. and then direct to tips all around.. the middle pipes have a little more padding in the center can.. but they will all sound great.. and you'll still have that center can providing some backpressure.. as well as the cats on both sides...
you will lose a lil down low tq.. but feel it open up a little better up top....
i was trying to get makers to make a center X pipe for a while (but the Base and S have diff setups.. one needs X pipe. the other a 6 sided pipe)... this alone would be lame, but hacking or then eliminating the sides would make it sound great (like my 997.1 and 997.2)..
the setup i suggested to you.. should only cost $500 at most for those 2 pieces of pipe... look under car.. just need fitting.. pipe... a 90.. and then another bend to go directly into existing tip... .. im sure fabspeed might already have it.. but a shop could make super easy...
all the bolts down there only get hand tight tho.. too tight and you'll feel vibration when stopped.. they are made to "float" and disperse the vibration.
just my 2 cents.. lemme know what u end up doing.. on my 991 i hacked the sides.. but still needed the center gone/modified... nobody ever made it and i sold the car before i cared to make it.

please direct me
Hi,
I am doing research but I am confused as what's the best for my particular Porsche.
Does this mean my 991 cab (non-S) only need x-pipe type of replacement, no need to replace the side cans?
Thanks

I also want to upgrade my exhaust, I just purchased a 2015 991 Carrera and was thinking about purchasing the Porsche Sport Exhaust from Suncoast and having my local Porsche dealer install it. My questions are; does the system come with both the "Sport Plus" & "the baffle" (the button with the dual tips) buttons? Is the sound substantially more aggressive than the stock base system?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I just joined rennlist after following this thread and doing some research on exhaust upgrades for my 2014 991 base coupe. I purchased it used and it did not have PSE. I previously had a 2010 997.2 and while the 991 OEM base exhaust sounded much better than the 997.2 base exhaust (IMO) it still wasn't quite enough for me. I drive the car to work as much as possible in the summer, so I consider the car a daily driver and anything drony and too loud to talk on the phone or listen to the stereo would not be acceptable. I focused on 3 center muffler deletes - AWE (I put full AWE exhaust system on former 997.2), Fabsepeed and Sharkwerks. I will say that I have not heard the PSE, AWE x pipe or Fabpeed X pipe in person, so I can't make any personal comparisons. That said, I decided to go with Sharkwerks X pipes based on three relatively rudimentary qualities - Price, sound clips, and simple logic that a straight pipe would seem to have less exhaust flow resistance than a U turn pipe (but what would I know about the physics on that).
After the install last week by my local Porsche shop (1 hr labour) I will say that I could not be happier!!! For the price of just over a grand installed and driving out the door, I am extremely happy with the upgrade! I will say that I did not understand the "howl" that is mentioned on the Sharkwerks site, but I certainly do now! It is certainly much more aggressive than the stock exhaust at cold start up, warm idle, and revving with way better pops, gurgles and burbles. I will say that the sound clips Sharkwerks have posted are very accurate. And I liked that they did not oversell the impact. The sound is more aggressive without being intrusive inside the cabin. And I would say that the car performance is slightly "crisper" than with the original exhaust - just enough to let you know it changed, but not dramatic. I couldn't be happier. The Sharkwerks x pipes ticked the box on what I was looking for - more aggressive sound that wasn't intrusive at a more than reasonable price out the door.

FYI there are hundreds if not thousands of posts on this forum on this topic, use the search feature and explore, its unlikely the regulars will re-type all that has been written on this. Good luck.
