Is that a full lap or BTG?
If you put the same horsepower and tires in/on a 911, would it be any slower?

They don't say if it's a full lap,but I believe so...plus they had the master behind the wheel Walter Rohrl.
I believe if you can put that kind of power in a 911,it will be faster!

I was a little bit "tongue in cheek" re. BTG question mark. : )
Seriously though, put 800 neddies in a 997.2 GT3 RS and it won't need computers to adjust torque to the front wheels.

The fastestlaps site reports the GT2 RS at 7:18 ... at 600 horses (plus or minus) could it find four seconds over the course of seven minutes if it had close to another two hundred horsepower in the hands of Walter Rohrl? I'd say so.

I like looking at the 918, the high mounted exhausts, the familiar, flowing lines of a historic Porsche mid-engine race car, but the lime green, the gloss plastic in the cabin and the painted silver "metal" on plastic ... oh and the bloody electric motors and batteries ... no, that's not my idea of a Porsche race car at all, at all.

Fine for Porsche to extract a million from each of a handful of doting, well-heeled, Porschephiles -- and the R&D is invaluable along the way -- but I'm in the sprawling crowd of folks more interesting in this wildly overpriced Boxster (sorry) showing up sans hybridization and in 2WD with most of those 800 horses and less than 3000lbs.

ps. 918 "stuff" goes in the Carrera GT forum:

I thought this is the Carrera GT forum,' cause it says Carrera GT right there in the left corner by your name ^^^ ))
On another note,I wish I knew what BTG means,so I can get the ' tongue in cheek '...
In terms of looks,I believe the 918 is not a finished product...it's still 1 yr away...just look at the tailights...they look off a 991...look at the steering wheel...that looks like a 997.2 steering wheel.
I just think it's a cool looking machine with a lot of technology involved, you can't really compare it to anything else Porsche makes...
BTW,as we all are aware,Porsche doesn't make things for no reason, did you know they made that exhaust at a certain angle so that the gas flow would create downforce when hitting the rear wing?

Its" Sport Auto " lap 20.600 meters, full lap minus the short straight passing the old pit area.
This is the reference used by Porsche, Nissan, Chevrolet and so on.

It is used because then they dont have to drive another lap after their fastlap.

It is appr. 6 seconds less than a full lap, maybe 5 seconds with 918 :-)

BTG is the acronym for "Bridge to Gantry" which is the section of the track available to the public on a daily basis -- it excludes a short section, a mile or so, through the main grandstand area so that people entering the track are forced to exit and pay for the next lap. I don't recall the delta in lap time to match BTG times to full lap times, I'm guessing it's in the order of 20 seconds "shorter" give or take.

BTG lap, possible to measure for normal people during tourist driving. (long straight is then closed)
Full lap, hardly used at all. 20832 meters
Sport Auto lap, the standard used by Porsche, Nissan, Chevrolet and Sport Auto Magazine. 20600 meters

8 minutes full lap = 7.54 Sport Auto lap
6 seconds shorter because you dont measure the short straight passing the old pit area.
BTG is appr. 25 seconds shorter than full lap, 19 seconds shorter than Sport Auto lap.
7.54 Sport Auto lap = 7.35 BTG

BTG=Bridge to gauntry. You start the clock under the bridge at the end of the straight, stops it under a big sign (gauntry) at the beginning of the straight.

BUT, when Porsche or Sport Auto do their tests they fly pass the bridge doing 250-270. As a tourist you have around 170-190 there, so at least 3 second advantage for the pros.

Thanks. I imagine any time Porsche quotes would be consistent with their previous vehicle claims. I was just kidding that it's a pretty quick number.

Even more impressive is the rumors I just heard that the new TURBO is doing 7.18 laps!!!
As fast as the GT2RS.

I expected more from the 918, but we might get faster laptimes later when they get the electric engine to work a full lap, I heard it is still not perfect.

With the new McLaren and Ferrari coming, they probably need below 7.10 to stay top 3 on the Ring record list. :-)

Didn't a Ferrari 599 do it in less than 7:00 last year?

What tires does Porsche use when they do 'ring laps like this? Are they using OEM across the board, or is it race rubber with competition suspension setup?

For any car that's impressive as hell but one with both gas and electric power...wow. All the other cars talked about in this thread aren't dual motors such as on the 918!
