Any thoughts on the Panamera compared to the 991? I had a chance to push one on short stint on a race track at a Porsch World event, and came away astounded.

Hi :-)

It is incredible how a heavy car like the Panamera Turbo can be so fast around the Ring, go around slow corners like a small car, and deliver tons of grip without cooking the tires. (Pirelli P Zero both cars)
The similarities with the 991 is that both cars are very predictable and safe to drive really fast. A new generation of Porsches with the same goals, at the same time very different cars.

Driving together the cars feels quite similar in speed, the 991 sometimes faster in twisty parts, Panamera faster on long straights. (this Panamera has extra power)

My guess is that the base 991 is a little faster, maybe capable of a 7.45 laptime 20600 meters lap, the Panamera Turbo is according to Porsche doing 7.56 laptime.

However, it really comes down to the driver. We had fantastic laps together, battleing 997 GT2 and GT3 RS cars and M3 GTS, incredibly fun!!!

Thanks. That is what I thought.
When I chased the PCNA Pro in a Panamera GTS first with a Panamerra GTS, and then with a base car I pretty much kept up, with speeds around 115 on the short straight before a hard turn. In a Carrera S (Sport PASM) I got a few more MPH and closed up a bit.

But recently I had a base Panamera as a loaner car for a week and found it reasonably quick for entertaining commuting. The driving feel is Porsche all the way, with great road feel and sports car precision (sorry electric steering haters). I had to look back occasionally to marvel at just how big the rest of the car was!

@Carrera GT; Yes I'm sorry for my grammatical error. I did mean the 991S PDK is in fact 5 seconds a lap slower then my 2010 GT3 around PBIR.

5 seconds is a long time on a track that short. Do you have any data from the runs?

Just a short notice, there is now a fix for some 991s out there. There have been reports of some cars behaving weird and twitching a lot. The suspention will be loosened and tightened again with correct values, heights and angles. My friend tested the "problem car" 991 S at Nürburgring yesterday, and the fix was fantastic, from hell to heaven!!!

Got a 996 GT3 and 991S. Love them both but the 991 is a maniac in "sport plus." I want to wear out the OEM tires and get something on it that sticks. I am learning two foot driving of the PDK because I just know it will be faster than shifting. The future has come. The GT3 is tracked but I have not had theheart to track the 991 yet but it just got it's first parking lot ding so can the track be far behind? If it goes, I'll give a full report.

P.S.: they are named "Argento" and "Scato". Anybody remember "Gladiator"? those are Maximus' horses. Ridley Scott figured out what "Silver" and "Trigger" was in Italian and dropped in the names.

doesnt suprise me:

1) look a test from 5th gear UK on youtube with tiff needell: 991S I think 2 seconds slower on a small track then 2010 GT3 (no RS)

2) 7:37 - When I watched the video..you cannot see anywhere that the real tme was 7:37..even so- maybe they drove on slicks?

3) Independent test of Sport Auto reavealed a 7:44 on the ring - while being 16 seconds slower than a 997.2S on a wet track. If you really think with a 991S you can beat a 458..or a Nissan GtR..well..you should better go to a doctor then...

all the best,

all the best,
If the times are not achieved on the same tires by the same driver over the same section of the track, all such comparisons (faster or slower) are meaningless, at best.
