I don't think there is much utility in evaluating track potential based on what you read in performance tests. I know a guy who runs mid pack with GT3s in the PCA expert group at Summit point in his 08 Boxter S RS-60, with a stock engine, lowered and properly adjusted suspension and road legal track tires-- and he doesn't bother to manually shift the Tiptronic. That to me is what will make seeing 981 S laptimes so interesting.

Re comparing base and S 991 the difference is readily explained in the difference in torque and horspower, and, if one has PASM Sport and therefore a lower center of gravity. I can assure you that it is quite obvious, having driven them back to back on the track.

Totally competent. In low gear you can tell somewhat of a difference but in 4th/5th gear – they become the same. And I did this on two different race tracks on two different days. That’s what sold me on the base - it was freakin fast. Dont look at 0-60 times that Porsche gives you b/c you will miss the big picutre. On a track, they are true 911's - base or S. Also, I did race the R and Spider on the tack as well. They did seem very competent but something was missing….
Is this Aug 2012? I keep looking but don't see it in Table of Contents. I don't subscribe but would download the issue if it's in there.

I was invited to Porsche unveilings so was able to test drive 911 s coupe and can, 911 base cab and new 981 boxster S. I only had 987 boxster S and Cayman S before

A) 911 cab was as good to drive as coupe
B) 911 s power was fantastic but I was more than satisfied with base 911 power delivery and Std suspension on 19s was very pliant, base and S have nice exhaust but PSE is even more better . The 981 Boxster S feels stodgy compared to even base 991 911 at low revs.
C) also after owning Box s and cyman S and test drove 987 spyder and 981 boxster s, i will say 991 911 's were more satisfying to drive. Mid engine, rear engine aside and both competant , i feel more fun driving a 911 so will get a base 911 cab over boxster/cayman

Having had both I can assure you that you will love it. 911s are unique among cars and the 991 base engine with its 355 hp oomph at high revs is right there with the best.

My problem is that I've never met a Porsche I didn't like. Cheers.

Anybody put a 3.4L Carrera on a dyno yet? I'm tempted to do mine to make sure Porsche didn't put a Boxster S engine in it by mistake!

My butt dyno at the track for the Porsche World event conformed that the 991 3.4 had more oomph than the Boxter S as the revs went up. It was very easy to carry very high speeds through the corners in the Boxter S with 20s so it will have to be a head to head to know which will be best at track speeds. Less than that it just don't matter!

Handling is a tricky thing to measure as tires, amongst other suspension setups play a huge role.

A Cayman R/Spyder compare very favourably to Supercars in this perhaps simple Motortrend handling comparison:

http://wot.motortrend.com/the-10-bes...11-148669.html

The 991 Cab was recently tested on Ignition (Motortrend's youtube show) and ran a slower time around the figure 8 as compared to the Spyder and I believe on par or .1 slower than the 991S Coupe.

Not a definitive test, but something to indicate that handling performance across most of Porsche's models is really close.

After lots of spirited drives in 981 Boxster S, 991, and also some very lightly used 997.2S I ended up going with a base 991. The 981S is a fantastic car, but I previously had a z4 and s2000 and wanted something a bit more usable with some more interior space. This new boxster feels like you are sitting in a bucket, it's like there are walls on all sides, and this is coming from a guy who is 6'1". The driving dynamics of the 981 are fantastic though, and certinly feel far different than the 991, maybe even a bit more comfortable from a handling perspwctive or just more what i was used to from previous cars. The 997s is a fantastic drivers car also, but the 991 base easily keeps up with it and is more refined in ride and interior. Im not even done with the break in and I can tell you it's really rapid but it the same time you barely notice how fast you are going. I drove it 1000 miles from a dealer back to my home (700 miles in one of the days) and I didn't feel any fatigue after the trip at all. The base and the S are both fantastic, but the extra bit of torque in the S wasn't really worth it to me. I am used to revving the snot out of an engine( S2000 needed alot of that) and frankly love doing that in this car, althought I have only a handful of times while still in break in.

Congrats! What made you drive that far for the car? Price? Selection?

Great Thread!

Picking up my 2012 991 Base Cab manual on Monday. My last car was an 09 S Coupe PDK. Decided I didn't need the extra power because I don't track it and just drive it around town on weekends. So where can I really use the extra power of an S? I drove the car that I am buying and my initial impression is that it is not significantly slower than my 09 S PDK.

My 09 burned oil like a 2 stroke! Hope the 3.4 is better in that regard.

Went back to a manual because for me I was bored driving the PDK even though it's a fabulous transmission. I find a manual to be more engaging especially if the car is not your daily driver.

Congrats!!! Isn't the 991 Base faster than the 997.2s anyway?
