There are hundreds of Porsche approved oils. In 3 viscosities; 0W40, 5W40 and 5W50. Mobil is the only Porsche A40 approved 5W50.

I like the 5W50 best because my UOAs show a more robust additive package and high shear high temp stability.

Despite the fact our cars all come from the factory filled with 0W40..... more is always better!!

J/K!

I was impressed with the "high shear high temp stability" of Mobil 5W50 as shown by LexVan. He knows of what he speaks.

LOL!

I have seen hundreds of UOAs. I can spot Mobil 0W40 unmarked from a mile away.

LexVan, How does Mobile 1 5w40 rate on UOAs?

Sorry, Daddy, I'm not real familiar with Mobil 5W40. I never see it in stores. Only on Mobil's web site.

Mobil 5W40 Turbo Diesel is a great oil. Many of the 996 and 997 guys run it. Turbo and N/A cars both. Very robust additive package and slightly higher zinc and phosphorus than 0W40 and 5W50. About 100-200 ppm higher if I remember correctly. It is also highly recommended by Kevin of UMW, a respected Rennlist contributor on those boards.

But I don't think these are the same 5W40 oils. Not to be confused.

I would not recommend Mobil 5W40 Turbo Diesel for the 991.

The Mobil 5W40 is on the Porsche approved list.

The Mobil 5W50 is very good and I see no reason to consider the Mobil 5W40 for our 991s.

Thanks LexVan. I'll be using M1 5w50 going forward. Curious to know why 5w40 Turbo Diesel is not recommended for the 991. Thanks.

Hey lex what do you think of Motul sport 5w50? Most of the indie shops by me use it for all of their Porsche oil changes. They swear by it. I also, like you use Mobil 1 and have been using it in all my vehicles for 35 years. I raced motor cycles and used 15w50 in my race bikes and in all those years never had 1 problem with any vehicle. The owner of one particular shop here says he would NEVER put Mobil 1 in any of his cars. He states it used to be good many years ago but they changed the formula and it is not the same now. I'm still going to use M1 just wondering what you thought.

Motul makes some great Porsche approved oils. This is not Porsche A40 approved. If you want Motul, select one of the 5W40 variants that are approved.

The only Porsche approved 5W50 is Mobil.

I did my first oil change today. Everything went well until I spilled a little bit while I was putting oil in the fill port. I guess I was pouring too fast and some ran down in the engine compartment. I hope that didn't hurt anything. I could not get my hands in there to wipe anything off.

It'll burn off. And/or drip off.

Definitely have to pour slower than any other car I've owned. The problem is, you can't even tell it's spilling because it spills under the cover that surrounds the fill spout. You can get to most of the mess from underneath the car to clean it up.

Ok, might be a stupid question but I'm assuming doing the DIY doesn't affect the warranty? Also, I have 5000 miles on my T4S and in Jan. Itll be one year of ownership. Should I just get the 1-year inspection done with an oil change now? I was quoted $370 for the oil change. Thanks.

DIY won't void warranty, if you do the work properly. Save receipts and log mileage.

How are you going to reset service light? Do you have a Durametric or similar?

Might be easier to do the dealership service.
